Setting boundaries isn’t selfish. You need it. And your people need it. You can set expectations about your availability. For example, if it’s not urgent, you may want to save it for Monday. This doesn’t mean you're shutting people out. Communicate when and how they can reach you. If something comes up, you can delegate to a capable team member and trust them to handle it. I make time every day to unplug, whether it’s for a quick walk or dinner with family. It keeps me recharged and sharp for my team.

Block your work calendar for breaks, lunch, exercise, and even admin time so emails and other tasks don't pile up. Communicate your typical working day to your leadership and team based on your time zone (and whether you are client facing or not). When on PTO, keep work phone/laptop at home and away if on vacation. Create plans and contingencies for your team to keep work going in your absence, and to hold the items that need your eyes for when you get back, setting expectations with stakeholders that the response will be delayed or escalate to other leadership. Use do-not-disturb and away notice functions and status as needed.
