Coaching requires very specific skills that are distinct from mentoring. Its important to know the difference and have a way to identify what is most needed for an employee before matching them with one or the other.

Mutual respect is at the core of good coaching and mentor relationships, so identify the experience your coachee/mentee wants to see in their coach/mentor. Maybe it is industry experience. Maybe it is analytical horsepower. Maybe it is experience being responsible for a P&L. Maybe it is experience leading large teams of people. Talk with the target coach/mentee to see what they want to see and then look for coaches with those qualities.

I agree that monitoring and measuring progress against goals is essential for coaching. Structured mentoring should include regular check-ins with both the mentor and mentee. Coaching usually involves a paid contract whereas mentoring is voluntary and more fluid. However, some level of structure keeps the relationship on track.

By using Technology/Features (e.g., apps and software), employees can browse, choose, and connect with mentees or mentors who best suit their needs. Employees’ profile hubs should be made accessible for searching and may be used to find appropriate mentors. These features will significantly increase program engagement and the potential to establish a lasting mentoring culture. In a large organization, this will create a tonne of new, previously unattainable relationships and will give individuals the power to take charge of their own mentoring experience.

Agreed that the focus on the end goal is essential. I believe there are two areas of growth and coaching - technical skills and "power skills" or soft skills. For technical skills, look for someone who can be a guide (who has done what you want to do but a few steps ahead), and plenty of coaches can guide power skills. For example, with the right software, reporting, monitoring, and tracking mentoring programs will be much easier and more achievable. This enables the program to be expanded or adjusted based on data; courses can be modified, and unfavourable events can be anticipated and avoided.
