Assess : Realistic & holistic threat assessment is the start point. Nature of threats & own Response Mechanism assessment is imperative. Mapping : Map threats & overlay them on design of infrastructure being secured, layout of ground & sensitive locations to give out the locations requiring access control. Match Access Control System to Requirement : As per the threat envisaged & access restrictions to be imposed. Wargame : Wargame the access control plan & make modifications if required. Deploy : Deploy the system alongwith matching policies,operating procedures & training modules. Feedback : Feedback be obtained from users, Tech handlers & the environment. Changes be incorporated to improve the system including upgrades in future.

For instance, multi-factor authentication (MFA) can be scaled based on sensitivity: high-risk areas may require biometrics plus a PIN, while less sensitive zones can rely on cards or mobile credentials. When implemented correctly, MFA doesn’t need to be a hurdle but a tailored response that minimizes friction while maintaining robust security. Consider user experience early on to avoid creating bottlenecks.

To be able to choose the most appropriate defense, you need to know what you're defending, who wants it and how they would most likely try and obtain it. The job of Defense is to buy the counterattack time to organize and execute. It could be physical like a guard pressing a panic button and distracting the threat until the QRF team organizes, or it could be a more precious and intentional service that simply sits on a server and monitors for disruptions, lock-out tag-out programs that hold servers hostage or steals data. They can be back doors that are auto generated when a server loses primary connection to a server and allows a secret backdoor that only a Blue Team has knowledge of in case of an emergency.
