In my experience first you need to make sure what is the theme for your speech. Once the theme is decided then only you can move forward. For example you chose your college farewell party. Then you need to mention things attached to the party to create an environment around the speech for that event, this builds up a strong base for your speech also making sure that those having first hand experience of the event along with are completely able to resonate with you. Further give it a proper structure which means a proper body and a conclusion and mention strong points from the event which are impactful.

Your theme could be anything ranging from the significance of an event to remembering the initiatives. You should also decide how you want your audience to react and respond. You need to be clear about the topic - especially about the historical events. All of this events already happened. So you must be 100 percent sure about the information you are speaking about.
