It's easier for people to assume wrong negative things and selfishly "road rage" at strangers they don't know and don't expect to ever know... working virtually can sometimes also induce this sort of malicious apathy between teammates. Effective teams need to engage at a deeper more personal level to share rapport and develop empathy. It doesn't have to be in person but some time needs to be devoted to engaging on a personal level. I don't remember who coined the phrase but I think it is true that people "don't care what you know until they know that you care". Become a servant leader, your example of caring about the success of others on your team will go a long way towards building a virtual corporate culture that fosters teamwork.
