One thing that works and improves safety culture is the involvement of senior management by reinforcing positive safety behaviours, they need also to continously conduct SMTs senior management tours..inspections these kind of initiatives has a lasting effect on employees cognitive aspects that truly the vision bearers value safety. In so doing all employees will realise its not policing but a way of life..and that is Culture.

First teach decision makers how to recognize risks? Define the system in detail and decompose your system into parts, diagrams, flows, operations, tasks, procedures, links, technology, interfaces and interactions; Bound and scope the analysis; Develop system abstractions…Figure out how to conduct inclusive system hazard, threat, vulnerability analysis and risk assessment; (many papers are accessible via LinkedIn); Perturb the system and identify hazards, threats, vulnerabilities, develop adverse sequences, (including actions, decisions, inactions); Define risk criteria and identify current risks given minimal controls; Design controls to eliminate or control risks to acceptable levels (within adverse sequences (risks))...

To gain visibility into what your safety culture looks like you simply have to ask yourself one question and answer it honestly. "How do my employees view Health and Safety". If you're confident most value safety, they understand that safety is important to their employer and you know they also view it as a priority, you have a strong culture. However, if you answer honestly and know most view safety as a waste of time, something that adds little value, gets in the way and just slows them down, you have a poor safety culture.

You obviously need a strong safety program with many of the elements mentioned here. However, most importantly, the line that says "Communicate your vision and values for safety to your employees" that communication has to come from the company's Senior Leader. This is why many Jurisdictions require a H&S Policy that documents the company's views on H&S and is signed by the most senior leader in the company, to be posted on the H&S board and be updated annually. Lastly communicating your values is only the first step, all managers including senior leaders must walk the talk, they need to lead by example and support the vision and values for safety, if they don't, even with your vision and values communicated, your culture will go nowhere.

Leading Safety from the top is imperative for all businesses. Where this Senior Leadership mindset is not in place generally people assume that the Safety professional is responsible for all Safety Management across the organisation and the culture becomes dependent and not interdependent as it should be. Communication is key and it should start with a statement that everyone is responsible for safety in the organisation and that safe behaviour is key to all activities and that everyone is accountable. Those three words, responsibility, behaviour and accountability are key in communicating safety responsibility across the whole organisation. The Safety professional should be managing the system. Communication is typically the easiest to do yet what is most poorly executed. Keep it simple and cater your communication channels and approaches to your audience. Hopefully by this point you have a clear understanding of who your audience is, how they best receive information, and what capabilities for communication you have. At that point execution is just putting those pieces together. My one point of caution is on communication planning. A lot of people do this, but not well. While of course there is value in putting things down on paper it can get very cumbersome. Don’t overload yourself with listing every single little detail about everything. Eventually you reach a point of diminishing returns and your plan stops adding value

I would say be mindful that everyone communicates differently so try and ensure you meet the needs of your audiences. We had some great interactive and sometimes fun as we all know the negatives although the positives are key focus for me in this area. To harness a person's optimism and ensure that it does not lose motivation towards the aim of a better future for the organisation and people involved.

The best thing to change or improve the existing safety culture is to engage the people and empower them. For example it can be a communication protocol where employees can share safety hazards as well as share the opinion about existing safety practices. The concerned safety experts can further assess the concern that have been shared and implement the best safety practice at site for overall cultural improvements aligning with the business goal.

Collaboration is one of the most important aspects as without people an organisation does not exist. Using kindness, sharing information, listening and language skills are key in areas of reporting especially. Try to keep information to a minimum as sometimes it can grow unexpectedly thinking we are helping. Clarity and consistency is important, it helps build a foundation in relationships, honesty helps to clarify and then empowers people to make their own choices. Everyone is different, giving people that respect is key. People can be motivated by simply showing them that they are worthy and valued. Simple gestures can breed human kindness, energy can be contagious so the more you bring yourself the better.

By leading by example it allows folks to understand that safety truly is important. Correcting bad behaviors in the moment, reinforcing peer to peer coaching will prove to be essential.

To foster a learning and continuous improvement culture in safety, prioritize learning from mistakes, failures, and successes. Encourage innovation and creativity in safety problem-solving. Continuously review and evaluate safety culture and performance, taking action for improvement. Employ methods like debriefs, root cause analysis, audits, surveys, benchmarking, and best practice sharing to facilitate learning and progress.

You can improve company culture by: 1- Involve down the level staff during designing phase of any procedure. 2- Initiate rewards and recognition program. 3- Open communication on safety related matters.

Having Security as standing agenda in all staff meetings and giving current safety updates and advisories plays an integral role in safety awareness and becomes a culture in the organization
