I had an executive who told me every slide she looked at had to have a Key in the corner of the slide. The Key had three options."Decision," "Inform," or "Consult". She would look at the Key and then the rest of each slide based on that Key, giving her direction on how to respond. She was swamped and wanted to save everyone's time. If the slide was to inform her, she could avoid spending time consulting. This is true in building your relationship with executives. Do you want them to mentor or introduce you? - If your objective is to be introduced by an exec to a new team or organization, tell them that. Not all executives make great mentors, so asking execs to recommend a mentor is okay once you know the kind of mentor you need.

Listening means proactive ones which is very important but at large the most ignored skill ever. we hear . not listen. Because when we listen even the disagreement words sound like some learnings .

This question assumes you are not one of them. Regardless your behavior should not be any different. Build your credibility by following up on any action items and being proactive. If you know this audience you should know what matters to them and try to cater to their needs.

Be authentic, meaning genuinely interested and engaged. Ask insightful questions. Build trust by being present and honoring commitments. Be accountable. Show appreciation through your words and actions.

Before the close of business the next day, could you please send notes of the action items you took away from the meeting? This allows the executive to review the action items, which does multiple things for you. 1. you captured all the action items - you were listening. 2. you can put timelines around those action items - Use SMART goals. 3. it gets to think about you and the conversation again - they may reply with something else they thought of after the meeting that is invaluable to your career.

When talking to executives, choose the right “zoom in/out level”. Don’t overwhelm your narrative with detail, but have enough data and knowledge to answer any question. When I do an executive presentation, I usually have 2-3 slides max that I show, but also half a dozen slides with additional details and data in case my audience choose to dig deeper.

Be yourself. We are all human and the human experiences is an authentic one. Be prepared to listen, learn and to contribute when it is warranted and asked for. Be curious and quiet in your pursuit to rise higher. There is no need to loudly prove yourself. Quiet strength is admired and noticed. And lastly, my favorite authors says: Let your praise be on others lips. Try not to toot your own horn or pull for praise from an executive this is not a noteworthy situation. Allow all praise to come naturally. If you are working smart and strategic it will come in time. But you must put in the time.

Initial attempts to connect with an executive might not yield what you seek, but don't interpret this as a permanent outcome. Persist by deepening your research on the executive, being specific and concise about your goals. Then, try again!

1. Say less. One mistake new employees make is they try too hard to justify their employment. You got the job. Now own it. Actions have always been more impressive than words. Voluntarily proclaiming all your credentials pushes people away and ultimately gets you nowhere. 2. Be authentic. You were hired as you are so again, own it. Set goals based on what you personally have to offer - don’t try to be someone else. Teams are made of individuals who each have something unique to contribute. Bring the better version of you to the team and execs can’t help but notice. Authenticity attracts.

You can build strong relationships with executives by noting what they do well and learning from it BEFORE approaching them. Building a virtual mentor-mentee equation, if you will. It is a pleasant surprise when an executive learns that you observed, analyzed & benefited from the skill set. Though, not everyone is ready to benefit from the executive they approach. With those 'ready for a master', a single session is all that is needed. Even though not everyone will benefit from the time invested in them, executives must be approachable and go more than halfway to leave a legacy.
