How can older employees effectively network during a career transition?

As a confident speaker and performer, I realise that pubic speaking is often the thing that people fear the most in life. I always encourage clients to be comfortable in their own skin, voice and authentic self. That way, public speaking, presenting and talking to new people becomes something to look forward to. By reflecting your own values, beliefs and personality, you are projecting yourself as well are your message and unique content. All the rest is choreography, practice and focussing on your key messages.

During a career transition, experienced employees can strategically network by tapping into their wealth of experience and leveraging it on platforms like LinkedIn. They can consider to showcase their expertise through engaging content, connect with industry peers, and attend virtual events to expand their network. Tailor their online presence to highlight the unique value proposition emphasizing the diverse skills and insights they bring to the table. Remember, networking is a reciprocal process, so make it workable to offer support and insights as and when needed

I don’t think age should be a deterrent to networking. Personally, I love to learn from other people. Older people should let their knowledge and experience shine when networking.

My 2 cents as a nurse coach is this: be intentional and build healthy relationships that are sourced from a knowledge of who you are and having confidence that you have something valuable to offer those you connect with. People value experience and information and can also sniff out disingenuous intentions. As I transition at the age of 53 from bedside nursing to that of Nurse Coach, I have found that defining my values and goals allowed me to seize opportunities in networking that were authentic and aligned with the goals others. Put the authentic you out there in the world and others will notice. Ask others what they need- help them. And, follow up after the connection is made.

When you imagine that person with you when you are presenting or facing a new challenge, your mind relaxes as you know that there's someone who's got your back. Mine? My crazy mother who was afraid of nothing and would have come out with all sorts of hilarious and inappropriate comments.

You want potential employers to get to know who they would be hiring. Sharing about what is important to you professionally and personally is a great way to help hiring personnel know who you are. Be careful not to share false information or opinions that could be misconstrued. You also want to show that you are up-to-date with current trends in your industry and even current events in your community. Showing the connection between current community events and current trends in your industry is an added plus.

Sie werden überrascht sein, wie positiv das Feedback ist.

Smile, make eye contact, and introduce yourself to people. Don't be afraid to start conversations with strangers. Be a good listener. Be genuine. After the event, follow up with the people you met. Send them a quick email or LinkedIn message to thank them for their time and to connect with them further.

Jede noch so ausgefallene Information kann jemanden anderem dienen, scheuen Sie sich also nicht davor, proaktiv von sich zu erzählen. Parallel dazu folgen Sie Thought-Leaders in Ihrem Bereich und vernetzen sich mit deren Followern. Kommen Sie aktiv ins Gespräch.

In my experience, no matter what age a person is, flexibility, open mindedness and having updated knowledge about what goes around in the their field and even beyond, make a big impact in networking and building relationships. Ich habe in den letzten 12 Jahren viele Hundert Menschen in ihrer beruflichen Entwicklung begleiten dürfen. Oft werden die eigenen Fähigkeiten geringer eingeschätzt, als sie sind und wenn man länger nicht am Jobmarkt war, muss man wieder lernen, sich gut zu "verkaufen". Older employees have a vantage point, given that they have worked longer than younger employees. They also typically have a more evolved understanding of the industry & the economy in general. I have also observed people respond to their request for help more considerately compared to younger employees. Older employees in such cases should shed the ego and get into an informal conversations with their friends, acquaintances and known network. They should identify & list down their transferable skills and prepare a strong narrative based on the varied experience they have earned over the years. And simply START interacting more with people in the target industry. Also initiate conversations with recruiters & seek feedback from them.

Be genuinely interested in people. Some of us focus on being interesting to build connections, but from my experience people connect more when we are interested in them first, then we can share our knowledge and expertise that we have gained throughout the years. We need to notice others before we think of getting noticed!

The wisdom that you have to offer is your super power but it is important to recognize that those who are younger also have something to offer you. When you focus on building relationship, you are better able to find common ground on which you can relate. Approach with a mindset aimed at giving, avoid trying to sell yourself in the first 30 seconds. Take interest in the other person and being curious about their needs. Your turn will come. Personally, I am immediately turned off by those who lead with wanting to sell me a product or service without taking the time to get to know me and allowing me the space to ask for what I want. Don’t be that person.

In addition to staying all the above mentioned, consider the role of coaching and self-awareness in your career change. Engage in coaching sessions to gain clarity on your strengths, values, and aspirations, it’s easy to forget the blind spots if you’re in this in your own. Coaching helps in understanding your personality which will guide you towards a fulfilling path. Embrace feedback and be receptive to self-discovery in the journey. This, coupled with networking, enhances not only job prospects but personal development. It's not just about finding a new job; it's about aligning your career with your authentic self, making the transition more purposeful and satisfying.
