Here's how you can prioritize tasks and projects to enhance your strategic thinking as a computer engineer.

To prioritise the task effectively, first understanding my goals. 1. Before starting any task or project we should understand the purpose. 2. Find answers of What, Why, How. This you clear your approve path. What you need to complete ? Why this task or project needed ? How will you achieve ? Once you know what success looks like for each task, assign priorities based on their impact. This way, you stay focused on tasks that bring you closer to your key targets and avoid getting distracted by less important work.

When I started as a computer engineer, I learned to prioritize my tasks by understanding the goals. Here’s how I did it: Know Your Objectives: I made sure to understand what each project aimed to achieve. For example, improving a website’s speed. Align with Career Goals: I prioritized tasks that helped me learn new skills or were important for the company. Define Success: I asked what success would look like. For instance, a feature that worked without bugs and improved user experience.

In computer engineering, I quickly realized that some tasks need immediate attention due to deadlines or client needs. Here’s my approach: Check Deadlines: I looked at which tasks had upcoming deadlines and prioritized those first. Client Demands: If a client needed something urgently, I made sure to address it right away. Balance Work: I didn’t ignore non-urgent tasks but scheduled them for later, ensuring all work was completed without compromising quality.

1. Define the goals: Determine what each task is for, and how it aligns with your long-term goals. 2. Determine urgency: Know the tasks that are urgent because of deadlines or cycles of a project. 3. Prioritize urgent tasks: Identify those tasks that would have to be done promptly to meet the deadlines that qualify as urgent. 4. Recognize low-priority tasks: Identify the ones that do not meet the urgency requirement but still have to be done. 5. Urgent vs. Important: Do not let demanding needs push aside your vision for enduring success.

Imagine I'm working on two tasks fixing a small bug in the login system and designing the architecture for new feature releases. 1. Bug fix: This is simple task that can be done quickly. I would slot this between more intensive work or during a time when I need a mental break from complex tasks. 2. Feature architecture: Designing a new architecture is a complex task that requires deep, uninterrupted focus. I’d block off dedicated time for this when I can work without distractions, ensuring I can think through the problem fully.

Tools are not going to help if you do not have clear objectives. Tools might be a good way to visualize and organize tasks but they will never know what is good for your business. Never add process overhead thinking it will solve your problems if you don't know how to solve them yourself.

Whenever you have to prioritize, think about the business, not about the task itself, or the technical characteristics of the work. Prioritization might consider low hanging fruits or easy wins, but in the end you always have to consider what is best for your organization.
