I completely agree with the concept of staying calm during times of emergency, as this allows the DBA to evaluate the situation in the right state of mind. The sense of 'I can fix this' would bring up ideas which would involve evaluating what the issue and error is, what are the likely solutions to fixing it, remembering that fixing it can either be instantaneous (if one is able to switch to a backup machine with a replica of the data in the database before the disruption) or time-based restoration (if one would have to completely rebuild a new db & load the most recent backup unto the db, not forgetting the fact that there would be need to account for the capturing of data that would have transpired between the time of backup & downtime)

From personal experience, staying calm is always the best solution. You can get nervous, but until you regain your calmness, you will be unable to fix the problems you have. This applies to life in general. To any professional domain. It all in your mind. Physical training, like breathing and remaining motionless, helps. But, it is all about mind and focus.

Staying calm during a problem is not easy especially when management is breathing down your neck. If you can, try to ignore the fact they are standing behind you and let your experience take the lead. If you have to, explain to management that you’ll get to the resolution when they step back and let you breathe.

One of the best skills to resolve an IT issue is to be calm, this will make you come with the best possible solution to resolve the issue at hand. Ante una situación crítica, la calma es importante, pero dicha calma se da por dos factores: por un lado, la confianza en uno mismo, en nuestros conocimientos y experiencia y en la capacidad de buscar soluciones aún cuando nunca vimos ese problema antes. Pero al mismo tiempo la calma debe venir externamente. A quién no le ha pasado que ante un problema, de repente tenemos a 20 personas preguntando cada 5 minutos que si ya está arreglado, exigiendo una estimación, exigiendo explicaciones y actualizaciones por chat y por mail, etc. Esas personas deberían entender que no solo necesitas calma, si no también concentración.

Se gun mi experiencia lo más complicado de manejar en administración de base de datos es: 1.- corrupción o pérdidas de datos en donde en como primer paso es tomar un respaldo de la situación actual de la BD y en paralelo comenzar a restaurar una versión anterior o habilitar el sitio local o remoto de contingencia. Para lo cual debes contar con la calma de tu equipo para que logren realizar las tareas exitosamente. 2.- Desmedro del servicio. Pérdida de rendimiento, capacidad, rápizadez, integrida, etc en el tiempo de respuesta o bloqueos de BD, para esto es básico contar con un equipo en calma que logre encontrar rápidamente la causa del problema, para lo cual siempre es bueno contar con buenas herramientas de análisis de rendimiento.

Prioritizing tasks It's something that I found basic. I have a few ongoing projects and every time I try to work on more than one project I get nothing done or I mess things up. It is definitely a must to prioritize tasks. One thing at a time it is always better. Maybe if it is an emergency you can multitask but only if you need to fix one problem. Es muy importante escuchar prioridades de los usuarios/clientes finales antes de priorizar tareas, dado que el servicio entregado al usuario final es el que debe priorizarse. Algunas veces me ha sucedido que en el afán de aplicar rápidamente una solución el usuario final decide tomar más tiempo para revisar integridad de servicio, rápidez de respuesta, etc. porque es más importante para él asegurar un servicio confiable que volver en menos tiempo. Documentar cada paso efectivamente es vital y comunicar claramente tiempo de respuesta de aproximado de cada paso, para manejar expectativas.

Do address this, following can be done, which i do too, - Set expectation on interval of communication - Give two set of communication, one for management (which handles business, clients etc) One for technical teams - Bring in right skilled people to resolve the given issue, and release them as soon as they fix their part - Give communication at least 15 min once for first 2-3 hours, then 30 min once for 3-8 hours, then 1-2 hr once for next 24 hours, then go to 4 hr communication. - If issue still not fixed, you know its DONE

Para mí el tema de documentar es esencial. Mejor que haya de más que de menos. Coger capturas, escribir lo que veo/pienso, las evaluaciones de los datos recogidos, posibles soluciones, etc. Pero esa fase para nosotros mismos. Luego el informe final ya tendrá solo los datos que de verdad son pertinentes para explicar el RCA. En cuanto a la parte de comunicación es importante, pero no cada 5 minutos. Hay problemas que requieren concentración. Comunicar que hay un problema y que se está trabajando en ello, sí. Antes de tomar ciertas decisiones que pueden afectar a datos o al negocio del cliente, claro. Pero cada cosa a su tiempo. Y que el lenguaje sea entendible para el cliente, también correcto. Adaptado a sus conocimientos técnicos.

Claramente se debe contar con las herramientas necesarias para realizar un buen análisis de la situación, tambien en mi experiencia es muy bueno llevar una buena bitácora de cambios realizados, sobre todo en ambientes productivos, tanto en BD como en infraestructura de redes, firewall, etc. esto más las herramienta de monitoreo, proveen de una base para comenzar un análisis de una situación compleja.

Tools are various in nature, starting from communication till the debugging they are used. My way of handling the situation is always starts with a raw block diagram to identify the probable source of problem. Once probable area is identified, second is utilizing monitoring, alerting, tracing frameworks in place. Check the metrices, identify what is deviated. 3rd is dig in to the box, a good tool set linux provides to debug each of the resources, sar if its enabled its fantastic starting point, will give each and every details you need to pin down issue if its OS/Hardware related. Next is the set of tools to debug log, grep, egrep, fgrep great utilities, but ELK stack, Loki, Slack or any similar stack will be of greater help.

"Te sucede una vez comprensible ... la segunda ya no lo es tanto" aprende de los errores, documenta causas, un buen análisis post-morten te permite definir, monitoreo, niveles de alarmas de eventos, etc. es decir aprender de errores y situaciones complejas para que como meta ideal no vuelvan a producirse o si se presentan nuevamente sean detectadas a tiempo y solucionadas rápidamente. Lo más importante documentar para que todos los equipos involucrados sepan como actuar, procedimientps claros y difundidos es primordial.

Si bien es cierto que uno normalmente conoce sus flaquezas y en lo que va más flojo, a veces encontrarte un problema sobre algo que pensabas que dominabas se convierte en un desafío y te ayuda a no dar por hecho cosas y seguir mejorando en esa área. Al final los problemas siempre te enseñan algo. La constante formación es necesaria, ya que siempre hay novedades en el producto o en aplicaciones relacionadas.

In my personal opinion, we learn until we cease to exist. There is no stopping. We learn until we die. That is one of the most clear things to me.

All database vendors add features to make life easy for administrators all the time. Those features don't come out of nowhere. To analyze the reason for new features is the most basic way of continuous learning, and that's what else contributes most to understand the demands of the field.

Always try to stay healthy but without it becoming an obsession. Once it becomes an obsession, you will only have a healthy body but a sick mind. You always have to find the balance between body, mind and soul. Listen to some soul music. I recommend.

Set and manage expectations from the Service Reliability, Durability, Availability, Performance, Response time, Resolution time, Vendor Response time, Solution generation time to every thing which you can think of. Money-Time-Manhour three pillars, and they take same weight... so need excellent performance, availability, reliability, durability, be ready to spend on all 3, if not enjoy the reduction of all in one or the other sense.
