In the non-profit sector, the purpose of partnerships, collaborations, consortiums etc is to deliver an outcome to customers (clients). It is important for each organisation to understand: 1) How the partnership fits the organisations purposes. If it doesn't fit, then why are you contributing to the partnership? 2) The expectations of each organisation. Who does what, when, where, and how. 3) Who is contributing what resources. 4) Who the target customer is. 5) How often the partners meet. What the purposes of these meetings are. What needs to be reported. 6) Any project specifics important to managing the partnership. Having some form of written signed agreement assists in keeping each partner accountable.

In nonprofit partnerships, it's crucial to prioritize unique resources over the sheer size of contributions. Alignment between partners should be strategic and complementary, not too similar, to avoid overlap. Unequal resources can work if roles reflect each partner’s unique strengths. A solid partnership also requires an exit strategy and a sunset clause—without these, there's a risk of dependency. Consider whether eventual mergers or forming a Special Interest Group (SIG) might be necessary, as the goal is not just organizational survival but achieving the mission’s purpose.
