I think Slack is one of the greatest tools for remote/independent work. Learning the super easy nuances of Slack and creating channels based on conversation flows is key. It's also a great tool for spontaneous ideation flow and something you just can't do in the physical office, i.e. I spark of an idea hits you at 11PM, you can share it and create a positive inflection point.

In a remote setting, communication is key. Utilize any team chat applications to have conversations (video, chat, etc.). Collaborate and engage with one another in some way. Celebrate their wins, their highs and lows. Communication is huge!

These don't have to all be events, like happy hours team member attend. Create Slack channels for non-work related conversations or special interests and hobbies. Start an internal podcast or newsletter. Meet your team members where they are.

Reach out to as many people as possible with intent. Let them know that you think there might be ways you can collaborate and explain how. The amount of response you’ll get will probably surprise you. Nobody wants to be sold to - everyone wants to collaborate and grow together. I did this for many years. I used to do a 100 connection calls a week and it completely changed my life for the better.

Turn your video on! This shows that you are engaged and that you care about the people you are meeting with and trying to maintain/grow your relationships with. Having the camera off can build an unintentional wall between you and anyone you are virtually meeting with.

Start remote meetings by asking how they are, how was their weekend; if they say they have kids, ask how old they are. Kids and pets are always good subjects and it's light banter. Often people show up two minutes early to an online meeting, out of courtesy for starting on time, and that time is golden for socializing with teammates.
