I would say that you should work with a trusted advisor or coach. People often give advice with good intentions, but what may be great for your friend, may not be good for you and vice-versa. If you continuously invest in your self-development and personal growth and not just in new skill acquisition, you will get to know and understand yourself much better and it will be easier to source the right "advice" that rings true to you and is aligned with your values and your career scenario.

It can be natural to turn to those who know you best, like family and friends. Their insights are invaluable, but sometimes, their advice may not be the most relevant for specific career decisions. It’s important to balance their advice with experts in your field. Consider the type of advice you need, is it general or specific? For example, someone just starting their career may offer a perspective on entry-level challenges, but a hiring manager or industry leader can provide more strategic, experience-based advice. Find a balance: seek personal guidance from those who know you well, but listen to experienced professionals who understand your industry. You’ll make a more informed, confident decision. Lastly if in doubt use a career coach.

#1 Revaluate your goals and make sure that they align to your values. Reassess your current objectives and confirm they support what you truly believe in. Reflect on your personal principles, priorities, and long-term vision, then adjust your goals so they genuinely reflect who you are and what matters most.

When faced with conflicting career advice, I always trust my gut. Your instincts often guide you—if something feels uncomfortable or off, it’s a sign. Ultimately, listening to your inner voice helps you make the best decision for your path forward.

When career advice conflicts, think of it like solving a puzzle. Start by getting clear on your goals, what do you want to achieve in the next 5-10 years? Then, consider the source of the advice. Is it from someone who’s been where you want to go, or are they projecting their own fears? If you’re unsure, test the options on a small scale take on a side project, shadow someone, or build a new skill. Ultimately, the decision is yours to make, so trust your instincts and remember: career paths aren’t linear. Progress matters more than perfection.

It's tempting to follow the latest and greatest advice from any random guru. I've found more success by only adopting advice or guidance from individuals who have earned my trust. Conflicting career advice can be overwhelming, but I’ve found a few strategies that help me find clarity. First, I reflect on my values and align decisions with what matters most to me both personally and professionally. Then, I reach out to trusted mentors or peers for their perspectives, which often bring fresh insights I hadn’t considered. Lastly, I trust my gut—if something feels right, it usually is. Balancing self-reflection with diverse input has helped me stay true to my path while navigating tough decisions.
