People can sense right away if you are not passionate, an expert, and do not genuinely believe in the message you are conveying. If you are, then its all about listening, acknowledging, making eye contact, and remaining focused on your message and their concerns - without wasting their time. Sometimes, your message will not resonate with them until after the meeting is over, so avoid doing anything that prevents them from following up once they have reconsidered.

Hook them from the start with a compelling story or collection of interesting data or information. Involve your audience actively through questions, polls, or interactive elements. Always address their concerns head-on, demonstrating expertise and (crucially) empathy. Keep your presentation concise and maximise impact—less is more!

Remember to smile! People like charismatic people, regardless of the topic you are discussing. Breaking through their hesitancy on the topic might just begin with how personable you can be.

Its very keen to know your audience well. Knowing there background and interest will help you to bond well. Also knowing how you put your thoughts matters.

If addressing a challenging group--maybe who you know are skeptical, already against the topic, etc, I try to be personable and authentic. Acknowledging the elephant in the room if there is one helps the audience to know you recognize the challenge they may be facing. Only then can you rebut.

I would probably open with this. Going “all-in” and being transparent that you understand the scepticism can be a good opener, and having that out of the way people might actually listen to what you are about to say, of course you have to be well prepared to tackle the root of their scepticism

Presenting to a group of skeptical senior managers, I would visually show what failure looks like with 'shock and awe' presenting tactics. Picture a slide showing a plane crash. Then immediately show a large black olive on the next slide. Next state that in the early 70's a large American airline saved nearly 1.5 million dollars in today's money by cutting just 'one' black olive' from each salad served in its first class cabin. Inertia is not an option-it's a one-way ticket to bankruptcy. To keep one's business flying one needs unified engagement.

You can suggest that they reword the question, go further to understand the audience's concerns, and always maintain your integrity and strength.

To do so, you should listen attentively and respectfully, acknowledge their point of view, answer their question or objection with confidence and evidence, and confirm that you have answered their question or objection satisfactorily.

I consider it a good sign that a sceptical stakeholder ask questions or respond to a question posed. It means that are willing to leave their scepticism asides and engage. It also give me an opportunity to dive into their area of concern.

Never talk to strangers! The more you know about the stakeholders and their pain points the better you can talk to those and address those.

The best way to engage an audience and build trust is to show them you are equally involved and engaged in the topic that you are presenting to them. Showcasing enthusiasm and passion while delivering presentations is a sign of confidence, a sign that you know what you are talking about and believe in it - and that naturally will translate into confidence and faith in your audience, which will then enable a sceptical audience to start becoming more receptive.

In a room full skeptical stakeholders, remember to not get riled up or provoked when they say everything they can to prove what you're saying is wrong. Keep your calm and your stance. You can do this especially well if you know your content well. Have interesting facts ready, some relevant hooks and of course pointers that connect to these stakeholders, sort of humanizing the situation.

Stakeholder(A part of the company either external or internal), you are also a stakeholder and they are too. It’s important to see that all stakeholders want the best for the company. If you are met with skepticism in a meeting I always like to remember this quote “a discussion is not fruitful without argument”. If stakeholders are providing different views from what you are conveying it is best to first retract and see the best way to achieve the smaller goal. If it comes down to a 50/50 choice it is best to look back and see the companies initial memorandum and goals and you will almost be clear about which approach to take. In my experience the Japanese always welcome arguments and remember memorandums to quickly clear doubts.

When we talk about presentations, for me its 80% the way of communication and 20% presentation data or analytics. Initiate with, Why, how, with whom, what in mind and then work on the presentation. If audience is skeptical then questions & counter question sessions should be active during the presentation and answers must have a humorous touch to engaged them. Role plays, phy. activities might be of some help. Further we need to understand that the purpose of any presentation is to provide awareness, about the new/existing skills be it soft or technical and/or discuss the matter for better solutions so, the presenter need to be emotionally intelligent to handle skeptical audience meanwhile conveying the purpose of presentation.

To further enhance the presentation, consider integrating more engaging visuals, incorporating compelling anecdotes, encouraging active participation from shareholders, and refining the delivery to maintain a captivating flow.

“Skeptical” indicates doubt, uncertainty, lack of knowledge and most often a fear of the unknown. Hence, focus on building trust; be transparent and honest; be well-prepared. The assigned presenter should be THE SME on the topic, has experienced highest of ups and the lowest of downs, because of they have no fear, immense passion and knowledge to ensure that stakeholders should have confidence in them. Keep it conversational and don’t just answer questions, ask questions. Understand why they have skepticism.
