Hearing perspectives is not enough. For parties to be encourage to share they often require some demonstration that the perspectives are not only heard but understood fully. If this can be demonstrated, people are often in a better position to move on, and accept the decision of the company even if it is not actioning, as they know the company made that decision with the same full understanding. I would highly encourage those in leadership to study and take a course on active listening, often courses in negotiation will have a strong component in these techniques. These techniques are not natural, but I have found they have greatly helped my ability to both help other communicate, and have more meaningful and effective conversations.

To ensure everyone’s voices are heard in a project with geologists and engineers, I would foster an inclusive environment by scheduling regular meetings where all team members can share their insights and concerns. I would encourage active participation by setting ground rules that promote respectful listening. Additionally, I would use collaborative tools, like brainstorming sessions or shared documents, to gather input from everyone, including those who may be quieter. By valuing diverse perspectives, we can enhance teamwork and drive project success together.
