Recognizing and learning from my own emotions is of utmost importance. Then I will try to build trust and comfort by actively listening, empathy developing, encouraging communication, and seeking feedback/suggestions. This may help in creating a more inclusive, collaborative, and innovative work environment that inspires the team to think creatively, take risks, and drive meaningful change.

I cannot overstate the importance of emotional intelligence, /especially/ in technical fields (where this has been neglected in many workplaces). As put well by Simon Sinek and others: No matter what business you're in, you're in the people business. Work simply doesn't get done without the people, and people are almost invariably your most precious asset no matter what your business is. Take two teams where one values their people and the other treats them disposably, and it becomes VERY clear which one will produce excellent results in the long term. Example: A leader of an R&D team at a biotech company recognizes their own stress triggers during critical project deadlines, which sometimes lead to difficult interactions with the team. This helps maintain a calm demeanor under pressure, allowing the leader to motivate the team with enthusiasm for their groundbreaking work, fostering a positive and productive environment.

Creating a safe space and approaching nature for open communication encourages the team to share diverse perspectives, leading to more innovative approaches to their current research project.

Participants from various departments, including chemistry, biology, and marketing, are carefully selected, recognizing their unique strengths and emotional states. From my experience, the best way to drive innovation in an R&D team is to focus on collaboration and creativity. Build a trusting environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and taking risks. Encourage cross-functional projects to bring in diverse perspectives. Make sure team members have the resources and time to explore new ideas and view failures as learning opportunities. Recognize their contributions to boost confidence and offer support during challenges. By creating this supportive and adaptable atmosphere, you can foster true innovation.

Example: In a heated debate over the direction of a clinical trial, a team leader uses emotional intelligence to manage the conflict. They listen empathetically to both sides and acknowledge their concerns, then facilitate an open dialogue, encouraging the team to find common ground and find out win-win solutions. By addressing the conflict constructively, the leader helps the team maintain a positive dynamic, ensuring the focus remains on the innovative potential of the research rather than personal disagreements.
