You're facing wildlife risks in remote drilling operations. How can you ensure safety during encounters?
Navigating wildlife encounters in remote drilling requires proactive measures to ensure the safety of both personnel and animals.
Remote drilling operations often bring you into close proximity with wildlife, raising risks that must be managed carefully. To ensure safety during encounters:
- Conduct wildlife awareness training for all staff to recognize and respond appropriately to local species.
- Establish clear protocols for wildlife encounters, including reporting procedures and steps for deterring animals without harm.
- Utilize non-invasive deterrents and barriers to minimize interactions and maintain a safe distance from wildlife habitats.

To manage this “biological” risk, involve locals who are very knowledgeable about the behaviors of these animals to be rangers. They should provide dedicated “security” solely for this risk.

Consult the environmental survey report undertaken prior to the commencement of activities. Be aware of all flora and fauna known to be both permanent and transient occupiers of the facilities area. Post this information visibly around the site, make awareness part of the site induction, and make the subject part of ongoing toolbox talks. Create a risk associated with environmental issues in the project risk register. Monitor the risk frequently and register any evidence of the listed elements being sited or encountered. By listing this evidence the environmental issue can be seen to be managed, or reduced, leading to the safeguarding of the elements identified. If during the initial environmental survey areas are identified keep clear.

Ensuring safety during wildlife encounters in remote drilling operations is critical. Key measures include conducting wildlife risk assessments, training personnel, installing secure fencing, managing waste to avoid attracting animals, and using technology like motion-sensor cameras for monitoring. Additionally, having a wildlife specialist on-site ensures expert guidance during encounters. Given the limited manpower on rigs, a fully equipped medical team led by a doctor skilled in surgeries and advanced procedures, supported by the latest medical technology, is essential for handling emergencies effectively. These steps ensure safety and operational continuity.

1. Wildlife Risk Assessment: Conduct thorough surveys to identify the types of wildlife in the area, including potential risks such as bears, snakes, or predators. Assess the likelihood of encounters based on location, season, and environmental factors. 2. Wildlife Awareness Training: Train all personnel on how to recognize wildlife in the area, understand their behavior, and avoid attracting them. Include instruction on how to respond if an encounter occurs (e.g., not running, staying calm). 3. Prevention and Deterrence: 4. Communication and Monitoring: 5. Emergency Response Plan:

Es bueno siempre revisar el EIA, de los proyectos y tener un equipo encargado a realizar trabajos no invasivos a esas especies de preferencia de la zona de la comunidad, evitando contacto en la operación y aplicar estrategias para alejarlas durante las operaciones.

One thing i have seen was diging trench and spreading salts( chlorides) in surrounding of facilities to repel elephants to get inside facility and damage equipment. Including locals does help to certain extent however contingency measures are also needed.
