Be realistic with your clients. Tell them what can and can't be done. Don't lie, make stuff up or conjecture. If an item isn't clearly known or understood, promise to get that information to them and then keep your promise! Be honest and make it simple. Listen to the client and take notes. Make sure to understand all their concerns/demands/wishes. Organize those into priorities and pair each one with your team's abilities as well as pertinent technical realities. Usually there's one or two items that stick out as pain points for the client if the technology in question is already deployed. Address those first.

I also think about how the solution can grow in the future when tech improves. This way, I balance client needs and technical challenges well.
