The most important thing would be to communicate our mutual needs, affirm our common ground and agree to build consensus on as many project deliverables as we can. Practically, I use a Venn diagram for this. In reality, I would naturally expect to compromise on some deliverables, redefine others, keep a few and campaign for one or two I feel most strongly about, and likewise for the client - achieving as much of a win-win-win as I can in the process.

It's tempting to go straight to defending yourself, but clients want to feel like they've been heard, especially when they're upset. Ask them to outline their concerns without interrupting. Use clarifying questions and use facial expressions and body language that indicates you are taking their concerns seriously. This creates empathy and can lead to an atmosphere where you can find solutions together.
