I’ve attended many networking events over the years and I find the keys are to be authentic, be engaging and be present. Whether it’s talking to someone you know or introducing yourself to someone you want to know, be genuine and be sincere, you’re there to meet people not just to collect business cards. Be as engaging as possible, people really want to get to know other people at these events, make yourself memorable. Show genuine interest in who they are and what they do and find common ground that you have together, and most importantly, be present. The last thing you should be doing is sitting there quietly or standing there texting or checking emails. This is the time to shine and make a lasting impact!

The following 3 key things can be kept in mind to make a lasting impression: 1] Your introduction needs to include what you do (the value you add) and why you do it. For example, as a project manager saying something like 'I am a passionate project manager, managing large projects with an objective of saving time and money while retaining high-quality. 2] Ask good quality questions, which helps you understand about the other persons strengths and listen carefully to pick up cues of the needs of the organisation. 3] Send a nice thank you mail after the event, and a very brief recap of what you enjoyed during the conversation. I just have to be myself, I know it seems obvious, but as soon as you are centered, sure of the reasons why you are present, you have figured out who you would like to talk with, you are on the right tracks. Usually the other people want also to communicate, so if you share the same purposes and the same field, there are great chances to meet interesting persons.
