Managing system downtime happens long before any unexpected downtime happens. Any system that has an impact on organizational morale or productivity needs some kind of contingency planning in place. That process will let you respond quickly and reassure teams that they can continue working via that contingency. If you are leading the team working on the downtime issues and want to keep their morale and productivity high - give them space, support and honest feedback to focus on the problems that need to be solved. Keep a look out for delays or drags that may speak to underlying issues which additional expertise is needed. It could take the team a long time to realize they cannot solve the problem on their own, but the signs will be there.

Unplanned downtime is way worse than a planned (and rehearsed) one. First of all, my team would most likely be the one trying to fix the system :) When this happens, a frequent and precise information flow is a must. In my experience, every hour on the hour works best. And it's delivered by someone that acts as a liaison, but not actively fixing things. But if not, these downtime are always good for sorting out something from the backlog or even (gods forbid) sort out some of the Technical debt!
