How do you enhance collaboration in your remote team?

Remote work isn't breaking your team's communication - it's exposing how broken it always was. Those office "quick syncs" are just sugar: addictive and toxic. Great work happens between meetings. Want to fix it? Start by making everything asynchronously accessible. Record meetings (better yet, skip them). Replace watercooler chats with shared docs. Kill private DMs - if it's worth saying, it's worth saying where your whole team can learn from it. When you're forced to communicate with intention, you end up collaborating better than you ever did in that open office. The winning teams aren't recreating the office online - they're admitting it never worked. Remote work isn't the disease. It's the intervention you didn't know you needed.

One thing I found helpful was scheduled colocation, it helped get knowledge passed across by way of osmosis and it indeed fostered collaboration amongst the team

Depends on the level of importance, if you need to solve some quick issues, maybe with a quick chat o short call is enough, but sometimes there are bigger and complex problems with a mid/long term deadline, so for those situations is more convenient, for example schedule weekly meetings and more structured with flexibility work style.

Take time to understand your team, what each person minimally needs to do their job and how best to transmit that information effectively. Also understand that some people need constant communication to be or even feel productive and others don't. Know which person you are, specifically, and which person each of your team members are. Learn how to leverage that understanding and use the tools you have available properly and appropriately to gather and disseminate only the information that needs to be shared and with who. Not only will you see improvements in team morale, you'll benefit from efficient communication. There is no one-size-fits-all method of dealing with people anywhere else in life. Dealing with people at work is no different.
