This might sound silly at first, but it’s really worked for me and my team. Replace the word ‘fail’ with ‘fall’. Fail keeps you stuck. Fall makes you think you have fallen down and so naturally you will get back up quicker. When you change the framing, you change the response.

Turning mistakes into opportunities for growth starts with fostering a culture of psychological safety, where failure is viewed as a learning experience, not a setback. Encourage open discussions about mistakes, focusing on what can be learned and how processes can improve. Promote a growth mindset, where challenges are seen as chances to develop new skills and strategies. Implement regular reflection sessions to review what went wrong, why, and what changes can be made moving forward. Recognize and celebrate efforts to innovate, even if the outcome isn't perfect, to reinforce that growth comes from persistence and adaptation.

Create a learning and resilience culture to transform failures into opportunities for growth. Emphasise the importance of constructive feedback and debriefing sessions following failures. Encourage team members to share their experiences and thoughts freely. Highlight the importance of failure in the innovation process and celebrate the lessons learnt. Provide training and tools to help people enhance their skills and solve problems. Lead by example, demonstrating how to deal with setbacks constructively. This method encourages continual development, cultivates a growth attitude, and turns setbacks into great learning opportunities.

I believe in the 10/90 rule—10% is what happens, and 90% is how you respond to it. Failures can arise for many reasons, internal or external, so it’s crucial to understand them and address root causes. If the team is dedicated and working hard, we’re controlling what we can, and success will come with time. Showing confidence in the team and reinforcing that we’re on the right track, even with temporary setbacks, is essential for growth.

Teams that usually thrive are those that see mistakes as moments to reflect, learn, and improve. Encouraging open, judgment-free discussions turns failures into valuable learning experiences and builds resilience. Also, normalizing failure is a key part of innovation, teams can take bold steps forward, confident that every stumble brings them closer to lasting and successful solutions.

As logical as the common sense, that you only learn from failures (rather than successes), might appear, as someone, who went through unplanned and sober outcomes from experiments and explorations, I know, how painful this experience is. However, looking back I can certainly say, that I weren't the person I am today, If I had only successes. Sharing experiences in the team and offering a dialogue how to overcome the overwhelming and unpleasant moments, can help in raising the motivation during a downturn after having experienced undesired results.
