When a team member falls short on client expectations, it’s easy to feel frustrated. I’ve learned that pointing fingers doesn’t fix anything. Instead, I focus on understanding the root cause—was it a lack of clarity, tools, or something else? Once I pinpoint the issue, I work with them to develop a recovery plan that meets the client’s needs. Transparent communication with the client is also key. Owning the situation and showing a clear plan of action has always helped me rebuild trust and salvage the project.

Is this underperformance... Mission Creep by the client... or a poor skills match? Any and all can contribute to "underperformance" (or an inability to deliver). From my experience, this is not one issue for underperformance but may be part of an eco-system of contributing factors. Reviewing products with BDM's can improve quality and conversion rates of clients and increase pipelines. Reviewing team capability with team leaders can ensure sold products are not overpromised (and under-delivered). Reviewing client briefings (to exhaust all details) can reduce misalignment. Seeking feedback and continually improving the way your team performs is crucial for success.
