To foster accountability and meet deadlines, I like to focus on making the time to have 1. Clear expectations to be on the same page 2. Regular check-ins to monitor progress and address blockers EARLY 3. Open Communication to quickly address and resolve challenges 4. Celebrate wins and or be in the trenches together to troubleshoot together if needed to find solutions when issues arise

In my experience, accountability is linked to the level of clarity a person has on what is expected and their ability to 'weigh-in to buy-in'. Creating that clarity is the role of the team leader. Creating the environment for questions and dialogue about expectations upfront is critical. As a leader, asking the team what questions they have for you establishes safety and allows them to unpack where they are going to need to take ownership, show commitment and ultimately display accountability. The culture of the team is both fed by and a feeder of accountability, so providing feedback in a timely manner helps keep accountability top of mind.

In my experience, teams do not miss deadlines on purpose. Missed deadlines can be a symptom of underlying organizational problems that need to be addressed. Begin by asking (and listening to) the reasons for the delay. Were the deadlines set by the team, or by someone outside the team without an understanding teams capacity to deliver? Did the team have access to the necessary resources, skill, knowledge, tools to complete the tasks on time? Is the team aware of any leading or lagging dependencies on the tasks they were asked to complete? It's super easy to gravitate to blaming the team, when in most cases the team wants to do a good job, it's the system around the team that fails!

Accountability often starts with clarity and trust. 1.- Try setting clear expectations, so the team understands not just what to do but why it matters. 2.- When they see the bigger picture, they’re more invested. 3.-Empower them by giving ownership of specific project parts, which naturally builds accountability. 4.- Regular, supportive check-ins also help solve and remove obstacles together. 5.- Recognize when they meet deadlines, and if things slip, work as a team to find solutions. When people feel supported and trusted, accountability can grow organically.

If this happens more than once then it would be best to stop immediately and conduct an honest and open discussion with the team members. Determine the causes of the setback. Discuss how this situation would affect everyone and the company as a whole. Everything is at stake and must be seriously handled. Work out on the solutions both short-term and long-term actions. Rally your team to keep back on track.
