I work with executive personal assistants where 90% are women and I know the challenges they face at every age and every stage since I have walked alongside them for 28 years. Women who are taking care of their kids or parents while supporting a demanding an busy boss (or bosses) will have setbacks, and the first person set back is them-followed by their families. The one paying their bills usually gets the most attention. Having them identify their priorities and if they are in the right jobs or if they are applying to the right positions is where I would start. #values need to align before work can get done!

Here's my take: 1) Build Trust and Emotional Safety-Create a judgment-free environment, actively listen, and validate their experiences to establish trust and empathy. 2)Understand and Reframe the Setback-Analyze the root causes of the setback and reframe it as a learning opportunity to foster growth mindset. 3) Set SMART goals-identify skill gaps, and create actionable steps to help them progress. 4) Rebuild Confidence Gradually-Celebrate baby steps & small wins, & emphasize their strengths to boost self-assurance. 5) Offer Mentorship and Networking Opportunities 6) Focus on Long-Term Resilience-Encourage a growth mindset, provide stress management resources, and align their career path with their passions and values.

Rebuilding trust after career setbacks requires empathy, collaboration, and a forward-focused approach. I begin by acknowledging my client’s emotions and challenges, creating an environment of understanding and respect. Help them redefine setbacks as stepping stones, identifying strengths and transferable skills gained through adversity. Craft a clear, tailored action plan that aligns with their aspirations, emphasizing achievable milestones to build confidence. Offer consistent support, constructive feedback, and celebrate progress, no matter how small. By guiding them to see their potential and creating a roadmap for success, I inspire hope and reignite their belief in their abilities.
