First and foremost is to have local offline backups of your 3d models. Second is to use strong passwords and also change these passwords from time to time. Third is to share with people you know and/or trust. When sharing files with the community, pay special attention tp access being provided, but very important is to monitor access to those files. Forth is additional verification such as 2FA. Finally, and I only recently started using this, is to use VPN for added peace of mind during uploads and downloads.

I use strong, unique passwords with multi-factor authentication (MFA) and regularly review permissions, limiting access to necessary users, ideally as read-only, avoiding public links. I keep an encrypted local backup (on an external drive with a strong password) for control in case of cloud failures. For files of industrial interest, I recommend secure transfer protocols like SFTP or SSL/TLS and avoiding public networks without a VPN.

This is not just an issue with 3D models in the cloud, but cloud services in general - they're not as secure as you'd like (or need) them to be. Different services offer different levels of protection. Even with all those added protections (2FA, encryption, multiple servers etc.) you can still end up losing your work, if you just rely on cloud. Physical backups are a good idea (HDD, SSD). If the models are small enough, have some stick drives ready to save them on the go. In the end there's no singular solution. Use what you can to keep backups secure.
