To have an effective DR strategy, you need to begin with a Business Impact Analysis which involves the stakeholders establishing the key services and the impacts. You need to establish with the stakeholders potential Business loss in time of outage defining the RPO & RTO. A well-defined DR strategy needs to have a thoroughly documented process that has the sign-off from both IT and business stakeholders. Planned and well communicated drill that tests the effectiveness of the DR strategy is key to ensuring continuity of the plan. Caution has to be taken not to forget the strategy in the midst of operational overheads whereby new services/systems gets missed to be updated in the DR strategy.

I have collaborated with all departments in an organization on Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity Planning. The first step is analyze and evaluate all systems and locations with various teams to determine what is necessary in an emergency situation. Once that is analysis is completed the team can then create a plan. That plan is a living document which should be reviewed at least once a year to remove items that are no longer in use and add new ones. By engaging a committee which consists on multiple departments within the organization, you have a plan that is robust. In addition, by continuing to review the plan you continue communication and cross collaboration. Finally is to test the plan every year.

Engaging stakeholders in post-incident reviews ensures plans are continuously refined and remain relevant. The process must engage management interactively so it gets buy in from stakeholders and makes the DR planning process enjoyable and productive for everyone involved. We have found that interactive table top exercises that engage all relevant members of the emergency response team in realistic DR scenarios delivers the best long term results. We did a DR project for a large NYC law firm whose CFO was over 6’ tall. At our first emergency response tabletop session we recommended she accept responsibility for emergency evacuation & relocation to their temporary DR facility - she asked “why me?” - because your firm’s personnel will be able see your orange vest from a distance and know where to gather… ;o) - keep it real & make it fun!
