What's the best way to get honest feedback from your customers?

The best time to ask for feedback is generally as soon after the visit as possible. And although the current trend seems to be towards asking very few questions, and in some cases only one question, "how likely are you to refer your friends to our business? "I am not a big fan of one question surveys. I think it's perfectly OK to ask a mixture of 6 to 10 questions that mimic the customer's pass through your business. Having the survey follow your customer's path helps you learn what you're doing well, and not so well, during the course of a visit. I believe a simple one question survey does not provide enough information for you to really sink your teeth into. And always give your customer a way to provide feedback in their own words.

When seeking feedback, remember that customers share the goal of enhancing your business. Obtaining honest feedback can be challenging as it consumes their time. Therefore you must make the process simple and efficient. It would help if you also offered incentives, such as points, discounts or complimentary products/services, to encourage participation and show appreciation for their input. It's also important to be prepared to receive critical feedback without becoming defensive or dismissive.
