1 What is signal integrity?

Signal integrity (SI) is the measure of how well a signal preserves its original characteristics as it travels through a PCB. SI is influenced by various factors, such as the physical properties of the PCB material, the layout of the traces and vias, the impedance matching and termination of the signal paths, the coupling and interference between signals, and the power and ground distribution. Poor SI can result in signal distortion, noise, crosstalk, reflections, ringing, and other issues that can degrade the functionality and reliability of the circuit.

4 How to design multilayer PCBs for SI?

When designing multilayer PCBs for signal integrity, it is important to consider the number and arrangement of the layers, stackup and impedance control, routing and via design, power and ground plane design, and signal integrity analysis and simulation. The number of layers should be determined by the type and number of signals, power and ground requirements, and shielding and isolation needs. Stackup and impedance control should take into account dielectric material, thickness and width of the traces, and distance between traces and planes. Routing and via design should factor in signal frequency, rise time, length, width, spacing, and termination. Power and ground plane design should consider voltage and current levels, noise filtering/decoupling, and return path of signals. Lastly, signal integrity analysis/simulation should employ tools such as SPICE, S-parameters, eye diagrams, TDRs, VNAs.

To optimize your multilayer PCB design for SI, you can try to minimize the number of layers and vias, use a symmetrical and balanced stackup with an even number of layers, and use solid and continuous power and ground planes as reference planes for signals. Additionally, route high-speed and sensitive signals on inner layers with minimal vias and bends, maintain consistent impedance, separate analog and digital signals, use guard traces or planes to reduce crosstalk and interference, use proper termination techniques and components to reduce reflections and ringing, employ decoupling capacitors and ferrite beads to filter noise and improve power integrity, and perform SI analysis and simulation before and after fabrication to verify and optimize your design.
