Measuring the social impact of the arts is complex due to the intangible nature of artistic influence. Challenges include defining impact, quantification, long-term effects, attribution problems, diversity of arts practices, cultural differences, subjectivity, access and equity issues, funding biases, ethical concerns, methodological diversity, and policy relevance. Social impact is challenging to measure because this impact can happen over the span of years and is not always immediately discernible right after an event. Additionally, most people do not speak the language of “social impact”, so often when people describe how they feel, it won’t be the language that we are looking for, they’ll say things like, “wow that was awesome!” Or, “my spirit is so full.” Which indicates that they feel better served than they are used to feeling. But, that does not indicate how this will impact them.

There are several indicators in order to be able to have objective measurements of social impact. However they are expensive and the tools are not available for everybody. Limited budget for most arts non profits is the main reason why it is difficult to standardize the measurements but it is not because it is not possible to measure the outcomes and the impact in different dimensions of our societies
