Laying out complex print publications in InDesign requires a combination of technical skills, design principles, and efficient workflow strategies. Here are some advanced techniques to enhance your InDesign proficiency for complex print projects: Master Pages: Utilize master pages for consistent elements like page numbers, headers, footers, and background elements. Experiment with multiple master pages for different sections of your publication. Styles and Paragraph/Character Formatting: Create and use paragraph styles and character styles for consistent formatting. Establish a style hierarchy for various text elements, making it easier to manage and update.

Master pages and styles are foundational tools in InDesign that facilitate efficiency and consistency across complex publications. By using master pages, designers can ensure that recurring elements remain uniform, which is crucial for brand identity and reader navigation. Styles allow for rapid formatting and reformatting of text and objects, which is especially beneficial when dealing with lengthy documents. They now go by the name of Parent Pages, but I couldn't be as effective on projects without them. I start with a blank Parent Page (called Structure or A), containing just a grid system. Then create additional Parent Pages based on A with the addition of page numbers (Type> Insert Special Character> Markers> Current Page Number), or for sections with different headings. This offers huge flexibility with a blank page or numbered page wherever required.

Setting text to align with the baseline grid goes hand in hand with designing with grids. This requires some foresight during the initial preparation of the document. When you do this, all you text will be aligned to the same baseline, keeping it nice and neat!

In general I'd recomend using three layers for any InDesign project as a minimum; Images, Text, and Grids. This way you can turn off/on elements you don't need to see or lock them to avoid clicking on them. It makes the editing process far easier.

Having an understanding of printer spreads vs reader spreads is a huge help especially if your designing a booklet. With an knowledge of how printing works can also help to create an effective design.

Try to keep each of your project assets in a folder called Links; InDesign looks for this folder in the same direcory as the InDesign file you open, looking for images that have been placed in your file. This avoids missing links, which might look OK whilst editing, but missing links are represented as screen-grab quality embedded versions of the original file, NOT good for export to print or screen.
