In an experimental aircraft wing project, we used functionally graded titanium-aluminium materials, where the aluminium-rich regions provided reduced weight, and the titanium-rich regions offered enhanced strength near stress concentrations. This material gradient allowed for an optimised weight-to-strength ratio, significantly reducing stress at critical points along the wing’s structure. The use of FGMs also reduced the risk of crack propagation, improving the overall durability of the wing.
