What do you do if your students' needs are not being met and you need to advocate for them?

In advocating for students, I've learned that identifying needs goes beyond academics. It's about understanding their emotional landscape and respecting their cultural narratives, which deeply influence their learning journey. This approach is not just beneficial but necessary for true educational equity, as it recognizes that students are not just learners in a classroom, but individuals with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and personal experiences that affect their ability to engage with and absorb educational content.

Clearly Identify the Issue Start by precisely defining the problem you’re encountering. For instance, if you’re struggling with access to study materials, specify what resources you lack, such as textbooks or online databases, and explain how this impacts your learning. Understanding and articulating your need in detail helps others grasp the situation fully. For example, instead of saying, “I need more help with studying,” say, “I’m missing the recommended textbooks for our course, which is affecting my ability to complete assignments and prepare for exams effectively.” Clear identification of the issue ensures that your request is targeted and actionable.

As engaging with individual students and asking them about their needs which are not fulfilled properly takes a lot of time, teachers should design a questionnaire about pupils’ gaps in their learning or well-being in order to accurately identify their unmet needs. Doing that, educators not only will be able to find out what the students’ needs remain unmet, but also could understand how they should channel their efforts into advocating for their pupils.

Begin by clearly identifying the unmet needs of your students. This could be anything from additional resources, specific learning accommodations, access to technology, or more support services. Understanding and clearly defining these needs is crucial for effective advocacy.

Rally support from stakeholders outside of your department can be an effective way to leverage influence. If this applies to a student-athlete, there are often faculty representatives and advisors that are dedicated to serving this unique population in and outside of the classroom. Athletic Trainers, Strength & Conditioning Coaches, and/or the Athletic Director can help you identify other stakeholders that have a vested interest in the same student. When advocating for the traditional student population, I would encourage conversations with Student Accessibility Services or the Dean of Students. Sadly, it may take someone with an official title at a university to throw their weight behind your cause before there's any tangible action.

To effectively advocate for students, it's crucial to conduct a thorough assessment of their needs. This involves not only identifying academic requirements but also considering social, emotional, and behavioral aspects. Engage in open dialogue with students to understand their perspectives and challenges. Additionally, collaborate with colleagues, counselors, and special education professionals to gain a comprehensive understanding of each student's unique needs.

I have found many students fall through the cracks because they don't have anybody advocating for them. As a classroom teacher keep a running record of your observations, strengths and weaknesses. When you see a student struggling, carefully notice the miscues. Try to teach information in a different way. Start the RTI process to get the child into the system. Often times teachers don't want to do this because it is a lot of extra work for them. You are asked to document the child's progress and chart what you are seeing to see patterns. It is often tedious and time consuming. Lucky kids have teachers who are willing to start the process and not take not for an answer. Get the student the services needed. This changes lives.

Talking without facts is meaningless hence to advocate students ummet needs, one has to gather evidence and information. There are different ways of doing this which includes direct interaction, collecting their work samples, academic records etc. A thorough analysis with recommendations should be prepared before putting it across to concerned authorities in charge of incorporating changes. A teacher can be highly instrumental in ensuring that students needs are looked into and considered.

Collect data and evidence to support your claims. This could include academic performance records, observations, feedback from students and parents, and studies or reports that underline the importance of meeting these needs. Concrete evidence strengthens your case when presenting it to decision-makers.

Evidence-based advocacy is key to substantiating your claims. Collect quantitative data such as academic performance metrics, attendance records, and standardized test scores. Qualitative evidence, such as anecdotal observations and student testimonials, can provide valuable insights into the day-to-day challenges students face. Document any discrepancies between the students' needs and the support currently available within the educational system.

Leadership is convinced by data. Bring the numbers. 85% of students are affected by X. 99% of students polled said they would benefit from Y. Get that 'n' up by partnering with other teachers from your grade, school, or department. Keep it student-centric but tie it into the mission statement.

Consider the appropriate timing and forum for addressing concerns, whether it's through one-on-one meetings with school administrators, presentations at faculty meetings, or formal proposals to the school board. Collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders to refine your approach and garner support.

Look for allies who can support your cause. This could include other teachers, parents, community members, or professionals who understand the importance of the needs you are trying to address. Allies can provide additional insights, resources, and support in your advocacy efforts.

Advocacy efforts are strengthened by building alliances with individuals and groups who share a commitment to student well-being. Engage with fellow educators, parents, community organizations, and advocacy groups to amplify your message and mobilize support. Seek out allies who bring diverse perspectives and expertise to the table, fostering a collective approach to addressing systemic issues.

It takes a village to train a child. In my classroom I treat my kids as my own. I want what everyone else wants a happy, successful child. That being said it is easy to involve others and use their input and observations to paint a comprehensive picture of strengths and weaknesses (or areas that need strengthening. Create a support team of parents, specials teachers, and anyone else who has input and who can offer support (reading or math tutor, small group support (EIP). Advocate for any support possible and don’t get sidetracked by a very slow process.

When you present your case, do so clearly and persuasively. Prepare a presentation or a written proposal outlining the needs, the evidence, and the potential solutions. Be clear about what you are asking for and why it is necessary. Tailor your communication to the audience to ensure your message is effectively conveyed and understood.

I seen first hand how you must be relentless in being an advocate. Many staff members don’t have the same drive or want the extra work load. Against odds with parent support I have took the unpopular view of pushing the support agenda. Of course backed up with very detailed records, work samples, and plans for action. Lucky kids have adult advocates so the get the support they need to meet their potential.

After your initial communication, follow up to keep the issue on the agenda. This could involve setting up meetings to discuss progress, sending reminder emails, or providing additional data as it becomes available. Persistent, polite follow-up is often necessary to achieve meaningful change.

Once you start the process, keep running records of progress, support, and continued monitoring. If progress is being made make sure the support continues. If progress is not being made keep looking for alternatives and alternate services for support. Keep being a strong advocate. I have seen kids blossom with the right support. In addition follow up on progress made with the next grade level teacher.

Legal and Policy Frameworks: Understand the legal and educational policies that may impact your advocacy efforts. Knowing these can help in framing your arguments within the context of what is legally and institutionally feasible. Alternative Solutions: Be open to alternative solutions that decision-makers might propose and be prepared to negotiate the specifics of these alternatives to best meet the needs of your students. Long-term Impact: Consider how the changes you advocate for will affect not just current students but future ones as well. Sustainable solutions can have a lasting impact beyond the immediate context.

As role models, educators have a significant impact on students beyond just the academic realm. By recognizing and respecting the importance of students' emotional and cultural backgrounds, educators can model empathy, understanding, and inclusivity, which are essential qualities for students to learn and embody. This holistic approach to advocacy and mentorship can contribute to a positive and nurturing educational environment where students feel seen, valued, and supported in all aspects of their development.

Many parents have no idea how the system works and how they have the right to request services. Encourage and educate them as to their rights. If the squeaky wheel gets support, be the squeaky wheel.

If at first you don't succeed, try- try- again. When leadership says no with their actions, you should be prepared to try again at a different time. With new data. And a different approach. It's about finding the right opportunity for change, and persistence is key.
