What do you do if you encounter geological risks in construction projects?

First of all, it is not possible for all Geologists or engineers to know it as risk due to lack of experience of the behaviour under actions and ignored until any untoward reported. It is seen that, when ever a massive failures occur, every geological features are then evaluated for risk and people end up justifying it as geological surprise. The question should be rather, what do you do to make sure that it's not risky? And for this, every potential location of construction should be mapped, and then studied with reference to the nature of planned man made disturbances and check all failing conditions, plan mitigation measures, get it designed as per the ground conditions, develop construction method and sequences and implement.

A geotechnical geologist encountering geological risks on a construction project should first thoroughly assess the site's geological conditions to identify potential hazards like unstable slopes or fault lines. They should then develop a risk management plan, incorporating design modifications or reinforcement techniques to mitigate these risks. O processo de identificação de riscos geológicos se inicia com a percepção do risco. Antes de tudo é importante ser feita uma pesquisa bibliográfica de registros históricos públicos e privados de ocorrências de eventos geológico-geotécnica do local de interesse. No campo o profissional deve observar e mapear feições de atenção face a qualquer condição possível de insegurança. Em uma etapa seguinte é o momento da campanha experimental via investigações geológico-geotécnicas. As investigações tem um papel insubstituível na caracterização do problema e, logo, na delimitação dos riscos geológicos. O profissional deve ter o domínio dos métodos de de campo, amostragem e ensaios de laboratório, para representar por completo o problema.

When geological risk is already encountered during construction then primarily assess the scale of risk , review the design proposal in the area exposed, discuss together both design and site team( much mandatory aspect which is lacking in the industry) and after discussion with all stakeholders, review the design proposal and its improvisation for the safe execution along the encountered risk zone.

You should monitor the site conditions, the performance of the risk management strategies, and the changes in the external environment that may affect the geological risks. You should also update your risk identification, assessment, and management based on the new information and feedback that you receive.

Typically, it's the non-consideration of previous project implementors of environmental and geologic events towards their project, not only in the design but also in the project timeline. There are obvious tell-tale signs that usually are noticeable, at least from my point of view, but were ignored intentionally or not. This is especially true for varying lithologic units where rates of weathering and disintegration get accelerated dramatically due to simple, but rather prolonged exposure to atmospheric conditions. Also, subsurface conditions typically presumed as laterally continuous by interpolation (a rather common occurrence with distant geotechnical boreholes) get surprised with differential settlements due to subsurface variations.

Defesas civis dos municípios, assim como o serviço geológico brasileiro (SGB) possuem planilhas e tabelas que levam em conta aspectos empíricos, tais como: - Inclinação da encosta; - Ocorrência do nível d'água e umidade; - Cobertura vegetal; - Contexto geológico; - Circunvizinhanças - rural ou urbana; - Padrão das edificações locais Além da avaliação empírica, a coleta de dados diretos, via investigações geológico-geotécnicas e posterior simulação numérica é importante para a avaliação do potencial do evento efetivamente ocorrer, por meio do uso de softwares de análise de estabilidade por equilíbrio limite, por exemplo.

Temos hoje uma grande quantidade de informações na bibliografia disponíveis na rede. Um dos primeiros passos para se avaliar os riscos das condicionantes geológicas de uma região é buscar documentos técnico-científicos disponibilizados por instituições de ensino superior e agências reguladoras como a ANM etc… A partir das análises bibliográficas se pode programar visitas à campo para mapeamentos de detalhe e, posteriormente, através dos dados coletados em campo, fazer a síntese das informações para criar uma programação de investigações geotécnicas e ensaios de laboratório. Após ter todos os dados supracitados em mãos, podemos fazer uma avaliação de riscos geológicos segura e condizente com a realidade do local onde executará o projeto.

Uma forma eficaz de comunicar os riscos geológicos, já identificados, envolvidos em projetos é através de relatórios técnicos elaborados a partir de dados bibliográficos e de mapeamento coletados por geólogos de engenharia. A partir das informações obtidas através dos mapeamentos geológico-geotécnicos, dados de investigações geotécnicas e ensaios de laboratório, se pode gerar relatórios confiáveis onde, além das informações supracitadas, é possível gerar mapas e até modelos 3D para dimensionar os riscos envolvidos.

All of the above. Unfortunately engineers developers and councils tend to dismiss our advice believing they can build on flood plains, along mobile coastlines, or on faults or unstable soils.
