What criteria should you use to evaluate applicants' portfolios or auditions for your art program?

Originality: (1) Freshness of Ideas: Do they tackle familiar themes in unexpected ways? Does their work spark curiosity and surprise? 2) Personal Voice: Does their work feel authentic and distinct? Can you sense a unique perspective driving their choices? 3) Technical Innovation: Do they push boundaries of their chosen medium or explore unconventional approaches? Vision: 1) Conceptual Depth: Does their work convey a deeper message or meaning beyond surface beauty? Is there a thoughtful driving force behind it? 2) Artistic Ambition: Does their work aspire to something beyond technical proficiency? Do they show potential for a sustained artistic trajectory?

In my experience as an artist of gifted talent, Visual Art Instructor and Visual Arts Manager when critiquing an artwork by a student even if the imagery is copied from another more renowned artist I look for how the artist has tried to make it their own. Meaning, how does the student add their own twist to the work? How is the medium handled and worked with? What, if anything is added from the student to add another layer of thought? I ask, "Why" did they choose such imagery in the first place? And, "What, if any, is the message? Although, I have come up with my own concept of the work it's nothing like gaining the perspective of thought directly from the horses mouth, so-to-speak. From the two perspectives is where I find my judgment

One thing for sure that I've found to be very clear is that you don't want to run people away from experiencing the arts, nor the creative process. Because those of us who are into the arts via way of creating it and or teaching it usually preach that art is about self-expression and to lose this basic ideology of art only helps to down play the need for the artistic culture. This is why I choose to introduce various ways in which to use the media and mediums, and then allow the student to utilize them in the creative ways that come to them. Afterwards when it comes to critique I may suggest on ways they can explore and experiment using their chosen medium and or media providing examples of sources and resources that will help them advance

Diversity in art can be explored in numerous of ways as it contains people, places and things. It really greatly depends on where the student of the art wants to go? Meeting a student where they are and understanding where they want to go is the most essential thing as it relates to being a highly successful art Instructor. However, as an arts teacher you have to cover whatever your school's curricula demands and in this case the only way you will know if a student deserves a passing grade is give them the assignments that let's you know they deserve a passion grade, such as, staying within the lines. Mixing colors. Imagination. Following instructions and directions along these lines. If this is the case how would you really know?

Once again, the position you hold helps to dictate how much freedom you have on the relevance and impact of students/participants. As an art teacher you are there to help your students understand of the Principles and Elements of Design and you understand what these are and when and how one or more of these have been applied in the student's work. The art teacher may also pick up on the passion the student had when executing the work. But when it comes to the rewards and awards for work well done the over content, placement, usage of color and medium and if rather or not the work shares meaning becomes the overall judgement as to rather or not the work deserves recognition.
