Trade contractors build up their own intellectual cost data because they know their own production and material cost trends. There is no one size fits all. As a trade contractor it would be wise to use past project history as a basis for future budgets. Add your new bids on a template that can separate price per sq/ft, or another type of measure you can use. Track the projects you lose and note what they went for. 1 Ensure that your database includes an integrated, well-defined classification system using a standardized code that is linked with the work breakdown structure (WBS) used in the project schedule, the cost breakdown structure (CBS) or cost accounting system used by the organization to track costs, and the organization breakdown structure (OBS) or standard resources/crews, so that a comprehensive description of the scope, durations, events, and costs is supported by the database increasing the usefulness and value for benchmarking purposes.
