What are the best practices for selecting and maintaining industrial safety equipment?

Las mejores prácticas para seleccionar y mantener equipos de seguridad industrial incluyen la identificación de peligros y evaluación de riesgos. Lo que quiero recomendarles desde mi experiencia en Perú es la Norma G.050, Anexo D, Normas Técnicas Peruanas, la ley 29783, D.S. N° 011-2019-TR, normativas sectoriales como DS N° 024-2016-EM y normativa internacional OSHA 29 CFR 1910. El proceso debe comenzar con un análisis detallado del mapa de proceso de las actividades, las tareas y ambientes laborales para identificar los peligros. Los equipos deben cumplir con certificaciones como NTP citadas en las normas legales obligatorias, ANSI, NIOSH y EN. La mantención debe ser periódica, siguiendo las guías del fabricante y registros documentados.

Identifying hazards is a science and an art. Developing the criteria for assessment is fairly standard. The potential risks can be understood, however, even with a limited knowledge of the task, tools, or goals of the work. utilizing historic information of injuries and illnesses from OSHA's public database, categorized by the type of work being performed. That is the science, the art is more challenging. This requires asking a lot of questions of the people who perform the work with a focus on what can go wrong both operationally, and regarding safety and health. Questions such as, "if the wrong sized tool is selected, what can fail"? Or if you stand in this position or kneel in this way, could a failure occur?

Selecting and maintaining industrial safety equipment is like being a superhero with the perfect toolbelt - you need to identify the villains (hazards), choose the right gadgets (equipment), train to be a pro, and keep those tools in top-notch condition! It's a bit like keeping your Batmobile running smoothly - regular check-ups and a keen eye for any Bat-gadgets that need fixing. And just like Batman always upgrades his gear, we need to stay on top of the latest tech and feedback to ensure our safety arsenal is always one step ahead of the bad guys!

Each possible area of failure should be identified by a process of criteria prioritization and categories. Can items drop, be aspirated, cut, break, create a slippery surface, require over-exertion, create an ignitable atmosphere, release toxins, etc. Once these have been evaluated, the first place to identify PPE is by equipment or chemical manufacturer recommendations. This can be category/priority 1. Category 2 can be more comprehensive, looking at the type of work and failure potentials relative to the entire work scope. Category 3 can be to determine 'fit factors' including usability, comfort and replacement / inspection requirements. This will provide a framework for the best PPE strategy, for each hazard and potential area of injury.

Luego, revisar las normativas nacionales como la Ley de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo (Ley N° 29783) y su reglamento (DS N° 005-2012-TR), normativas sectoriales y estándares internacionales como las directrices de la OSHA y la norma ISO 45001 para implementar Equipos de protección Personal (EPP) cumplimiento las normativas para los requisitos de resistencia, comodidad y ajuste

Certain PPE may not work unilaterally for all employees. They should have the opportunity to practice with the chosen PPE and ensure that it is usable, fits properly, and meets their needs, provides a sense of protection and be applicable for their work scope.

En Perú, la Ley N° 29783 y su reglamento DS N° 005-2012-TR establecen la obligación de proporcionar EPP y capacitación continua. A nivel internacional, la ISO 45001:2018 enfatiza la identificación de peligros y la gestión de riesgos. La formación debe incluir la identificación de peligros y evaluación de riesgos para el correcto uso de los EPP. Según mi experiencia, capacitar a los trabajadores permite el cumplimiento de las normativas, y también fomenta una cultura de seguridad, reduciendo incidentes y promoviendo un entorno laboral más seguro y productivo.

Según la Ley de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo de Perú (Ley N° 29783) y estándares internacionales como OSHA y ANSI, el uso adecuado de EPP reduce significativamente accidentes laborales. Una utilidad que he encontrado en la supervisión efectiva es que los líderes de proyecto deben asegurarse de que los EPP se usen adecuadamente y de que se realicen inspecciones regulares.

Establishing an open communication line for failures of PPE that may occur prior to the scheduled inspection dates should be put in place.

I would recommend referencing the need for eliminating and engineering out potential hazards as a part of the assessment process, this will provide a better framework for selecting the appropriate PPE.

Effective selection and maintenance of industrial safety equipment start with planning alongside stakeholders, ensuring alignment with workplace layout, processes, and utilities. Critical steps include passing the (FAT) and ensuring seamless installation for (SAT). Engaging the operations team in risk assessment is crucial, utilizing info like manufacturer manuals, FAT/SAT reports, commissioning data, and operator training. Assess risks considering the work environment, including noise, vibration, light, air quality, and local regulatory standards. Focus on identifying hazards, evaluating risks with current controls, and adding measures to mitigate residual risks, to eliminate/minimize risks. This approach ensures safety and compliance.
