There are a few things you want to consider when setting up your commission structure: 1. Look at the competition in the space - this doesn't mean you should copy them, but you should avoid going lower. 2. Make it compelling - be it for the publisher to promote or even the customer to buy (cashback/loyalty) 3. Are there some categories you can pay more than others? Then set your CPA up to work this way and make sure the right data is going to the network, but make sure there are not too many and it's easy to understand. 4. Leave room for improvement - you may want to optimise/get more exposure later by increasing CPA 5. Not everyone will want a CPA - be prepared to pay out publishers on a CPC, especially large content sites.

From the brand side, top advice is to start by working with your finance team - explain the value your top affiliates bring to the business; numbers for the last 12 months always help! The base payout should be at par or more with industry or competition, and there should be performance-based tier structure to acknowledge and motivate passionate partners. But never ignore the small partners, this will help to mitigate risks.

Your top affiliates will always get a bit more attention, but you can never ignore affiliates in the long tail. Thinking about training, brands and networks must work together to ensure that affiliates understand the network platforms. When choosing a network platform or SaaS, brands need to think about how intuitive the affiliate UX is, more than the brand UX.

Have a clear onboarding guide with support available within 24h of their request. Don't expect top publishers to look for information themselves. Share as much relevant info as you can but don't spam them. Make it easy for them to place new content. Always share new product updates, big offline campaigns, market changes, press releases, etc. with them. This way they can prepare their content and SEO on time for new opportunities, but also make timely changes if there are severe negative changes to your industry. When answering random support questions, don't just answer but consult. Give them strategic insights. Provide actionable tips for execution.

Despite being one of the UK’s highest grossing content sites I can honestly say that I’ve never been offered any sort of discount or inventive. This is because affiliate is given to a junior in the marketing department to manage whilst access to (for eg) hotel stays for review purposes sits within PR / media. Remember to segment/group your affiliates - both in (potential?) performance levels and also types. The incentive for a large cashback publisher will look different to a small content site, but they both require focus. A content site might be more interested in a bonus commission rate if a level is hit, but a cashback site wouldn't be able to work this way - and it would be best to incentivise the customer of the cashback site (such as increased cashback for higher basket values, for example). If you group the high performing, mid level and then "long tail", you can work with each level differently; perhaps target a few long tail publishers and see what they need to move them up to mid-level. This will ensure an ever-improving campaign.
