Square and Rectangular Pergolas, are very stable, but the most important reasons is the ease of manufacturing and installation, round or oval pergola require special machines and high skill, and it is not available for common contractors. that's why Square and rectangular pergolas are more widely used.

In my opinion, the best way to choose a pergola shape and size depends on the number of users and space available. Incase of space constraint, square or rectangular shaped pergola would be the most preferred option. However, to accomodate more people with no spatial constraint, a circular or hexagonal shaped pergola would be preferable. Additionally, the landscape design language also plays an important role in determining the pergola shape. A hexagonal or circular shaped pergola would sync well with a organic design language.
