I agree with you but make it easy, do not confuse to less experienced person, theoretical you should be aware what extra commitments can cause this issue, including cables, dns, network configuration, routing or switching tables, supported packet size in network, qos etc. I can't assume everything in OSI layer modules. This comes from experience and practice.

Slow internet is the common network related issue , need to verify your connected wifi speed, bandwidth , you are passing through different networks , Setting up QOS(quality of service). issues in connectivity causes of Hardware failures, duplicate IP addresses, DNS resolution, cpu usage , VPN connection issue, packet loss, configuration errors. OSI layers physical layer has hardware related issues like bad cables, old devices. Outdated versions.

Troubleshoot network issues by finding the network path using tools like traceroute and see if the network path is constant. Focus on using ICMP and TCP tools like hping2 in order to identify latency or firewall issues. Some firewalls or routers will behave inconsistently during high network load / traffic hours. So, it is advised to conduct these network tests during different time windows, on and off business hours and make a proper comparison of latency in milliseconds and testing different services: HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SIP, RTP, etc.

Once I have esablished the basics, I can go ahead with troubleshooting the network. I would try to get some visibility on the network traffic with tcpdump promiscuously: `tcpdump -nni any -vvvAs0 -p -c99` I would keep analyzing the packet dump, appending and modifying BPF expressions to the above with each iteration until the issue is reflected. Either I find the packet or not, with either case reflecting some anamoly. Then I would either move to analyze further with Wireshark, generate missing traffic using it, curl or some other tool, or both until a clear problem statement forms. In complex cases, and to deal with scale, it help when I have NetFlow/observability tools deployed such as NTop/NG, moloch/arkime or even Graylog/ELK/beats.

Then again, networks today have become way more complex with additional layers through tunneling and/or overlays. I sometimes have to traverse the classical stack multiple times. It helps to be prepared with the right tools already deployed and providing continuous visibility, observability and analytics in order to minimize the time to resolution. All the tools I use are open source too.

In more complex cases, you may need to upgrade firmware, optimize hardware, or reconfigure firewall settings to fully resolve the issue.

After implementing a solution, continuous monitoring is crucial to ensure the issue doesn’t reoccur. Use network monitoring tools to track the performance of the system and check for any lingering or related issues. For instance, if you’ve resolved a bandwidth issue, monitor traffic loads over the next several days to confirm the solution’s effectiveness. This step is essential for ensuring that the fix is permanent and that network stability is maintained. Monitoring also allows you to proactively address any new issues that may arise as a result of the changes.
