I would add that it's important for small business owners to show their commitment to both. It can be easy to let the challenges of the daily operation delay planning for the future. I recommend building a daily process to deal with the daily business (ie., beginning of the day meeting and mid afternoon reconnect) and schedule future planning work on a weekly or monthly basis at times when the daily issues have typically calmed down. Commit to not rescheduling the future planning session.

Focus on Results > Activity: Know when something can really have an impact on performance vs when it's a 'nice to have'. That result doesn't need to be immediate, but desired result should be clear.
