1.Foster Open Communication: Regular interdisciplinary meetings and anonymous feedback channels can help bridge gaps and address concerns. 2.Develop Collaborative Care Plans: Forming interdisciplinary teams allows for shared goals that prioritize patient-centered care. 3.Utilize Data-Driven Decisions: Relying on metrics related to patient outcomes can guide informed discussions and minimize biases. 4.Empower Frontline Staff: Involving staff in decision-making fosters engagement and accountability. 5.Implement Conflict Resolution Mechanisms: Establishing mediation processes and open forums can help resolve disagreements constructively.

Frequent, transparent communication with physicians is always necessary, but especially in times where both sides seem to be at an impasse. I find that engagement of Department Chairs and Section Chiefs is vital - clearly outlining the administrative position on the issue, including the "why" behind your decision. Most importantly - administrators must be open to suggestions and feedback from our physician partners and remain open to adjusting our position at times based on physician input.

One aspect to consider is the proverb of “walk in my shoes”. At our institution, the corporate folks were invited to join the doctors at the hospital to see first hand both the needs and challenges of providing high quality and affordable care. Some of the physicians were invited to sit in on corporate meetings to have a better understanding of the difficulty to achieve a profit margin. Once each side saw the other’s perspective up front, the level of understanding and camaraderie increased.
