How do you use branding in web design?

I've always enjoyed diving deep into the core of a brand, understanding its mission, vision, values, and unique selling propositions. 🧭 In each project, I try to carefully craft the brand's personality and style, aligning them with the target audience's needs and aspirations. 🎯

Many people consider branding to be the logo and the colours they use on their website, but branding is so much more than that. Therefore, many who use the term "branding" may actually mean this when in fact, professionals use branding to mean something else. Your brand strategy should be about how your business comes across to other people. The visual aspects of it is just one element. The many elements of a brand strategy include: - Competitive awareness - Purpose. - Consistency - Loyalty - Employee involvement - Flexibility - Emotion

One of the first steps in implementing branding is to ensure a consistent visual identity throughout your website. This includes using the same color palette, typography, and imagery that align with your brand's personality. Consistency helps visitors recognize and remember your brand. Your brand's essence should be reflected in the overall user experience. Ensure that the navigation, layout, and interactions on your website align with your brand's values and goals. A positive user experience can leave a lasting impression on your visitors. Lastly, a responsive design ensures that your brand message remains intact, regardless of the device being used.

Client is King so a strategy should be amazing to please the King - I always prepare a moodboard which has all the necessary branding elements of a brand in one place. Easy & quick access to components of a design gives you a time & space for thinking, imagining the execution of the design properly.

Colors in web design play a vital role in branding. Each color evokes specific emotions and associations, allowing businesses to create a distinct identity and connect with their audience effectively. For example: Coca-Cola's website prominently features its iconic red color, creating a strong brand association. The use of red throughout the site evokes excitement, energy, and the brand's rich heritage.

Absolutely agree, colour is an incredibly important aspect to web design when defining a brand. It helps the visitor to feel 'at home' whilst browsing your site. Subtle palette flecks can initiate a subconscious brand recognition, which in turn will boost and encourage engagement with your content resulting in a longer and hopefully return visit

There's a lot of psychology around colours. You may not have consciously noticed it, but you will have picked up on it. For example: - Greens are often used in nature brands, or ones associated with money - Red is very bold and energetic - Black often represents luxury and authority Therefore, when you're picking a colour for your brand, do some research into what that colour means and how it makes people feel. Just like how Netflix uses the modern, sans-serif typeface 'Gotham' for its simplicity and readability, or how Airbnb uses 'Circular' to reflect their friendly, approachable image. I try to pick a font that tells a story while being easy on the eyes. 👀📖

Fonts can really form the visual vibe of a brand. Just like with the colours, the types of font will give off a different feeling. For example: - Serif: these are the fonts with the little edges attached to them (the serifs!). These evoke feelings of history, tradition, honesty, and integrity. - Sans Serif: these are the ones without any serifs. They are considered more modern and minimalist. They are chosen as they are clear and easy to read. - Scripts: these are the ones that feel more like handwriting. They are considered to be more stylish, but very difficult to read. You will also need to consider whether your font requires a license to be used. Some also only allow you to use it for print, but then not on the web.

Logo is a must for any project, be it UI UX, Web or app design, or brochure, social media or any kind of design, logo is a face of any project and believe me it's a first component that'll give your design a proper direction. I always design & use a logo even for dummy & mock projects that I do for my practice & portfolio or learning purposes.

Remember, your logo is not your brand, but it is an important element of your brand. Many people try to make a logo with symbol, which tries to describe what the company does. This is very old school and is most definitely not required. Many logos now are just the brand name written in a particular font - letterform logos. Often, logos are combination marks - both the name and a symbol. Many people put a lot of emphasis on the logo and consider it to be the most important thing about a brand. In reality, it's not as important as you might think. Yes, you should be distinctive, but it's how you show up, your tone of voice and your marketing comms that makes more of an impact on your brand.

The suggestion of stock imagery is actually quite a bad one, IMO. Back in the day, stock images were used a lot, but nowadays it is cringed at. It's very obvious when a company uses stock imagery and it suggests that they're not established enough to have their own imagery. You should have images that clearly reflect your brand, not ones that could be seen on anyone's website. Also, when it comes to sustainable web design, you want to limit the use of images, unless it's necessary. No stock image is going to be necessary to tell the story, as it's not even your brand's image. So, try to invest in your own branded imagery, or create custom graphics instead.

One thing I've found helpful when applying brand icons is to create a consistent style guide that outlines how and when to use them. This guide should include guidelines on the size, color, and placement of the icons, as well as any specific meanings or associations they have within your brand. By having a clear set of rules to follow, you can ensure that your icons are used consistently across all platforms and applications, which helps to reinforce your brand's identity and improve user experience.

Starting with a clear picture of the best fit customer is key because they are who we are making the website for. We are not making websites for business owners, c-suite, founders, directors, etc. The website is for the customer. This fact falls apart when clear profiles of ideal customers are missing. So when I start a new website, it begins with a session dedicated exclusively to the brand’s customers. Everything builds up and out from there.

Transitioning my experience in branding to web design usually takes place on a style guide or brand guide page on the website that I produce as a hidden page to search engines. This page is where I being to outline the various colors, fonts, and other identity pieces that will be threaded throughout the design components on a site. For instance, with the fonts we chose for the brand, we want to incorporate them into the website H1-H6, or at least H1-H3. Along with the HTML heading font, I may also incorporate colors used in the brand style to outline the colors of the headings on the page.
