How do you prioritize and manage dependencies across multiple business domains and roadmaps?

As a first step I would recommend to understanding the vision / mission of each domaine as well as the Value Chain. Organization are by nature requires the collaboration and interdependence of many domaine, so it’s normal and expected to find dependencies. However aligning vision ne agenda it’s in my opinion critical to properly understand dependencies and come-up with the optimal master roadmap.

I agree there are many dependency mapping techniques but the ones that resonate the most with executives which show a clear connection between the business outcomes, the objectives driving those outcomes, anticipated changes, and the enablers (people, processes and systems). The reason why these mapping do not have the intended effect is because they sometimes have many connections. Focus on the key connections to drive home your message vs. showing all the connections. Highlighting all the connections only proves that you did your homework, nothing more.

To navigate dependencies amid business domains and roadmaps, a fundamental grasp of what initiatives we have is essential. Dependencies encapsulate connections among the activities, outcomes, and deliverables, requiring synchronization and alignment. Business Architects amplify this insight through capability models and other artefacts like value streams, unveiling intricate interdependencies. Collaboration among Business Architects and cross-domain stakeholders sharpens this understanding, ensuring real-world accuracy. In essence, mastering dependencies forms the core of successful management. Utilizing both visual tools and capability models empowers organizations to confidently traverse the strategic landscape.

The key part that is missing here is that of business value. Ultimately, your final course of action is dependent on the value provided to the business. So impact (of all kinds) should be attempted to be quantified in a language that shareholders would understand.

I agree it is business value but for me you have to clear the bottleneck. Establishing which project is preventing the business to grow will add business value and enable the other pronjects.

Evaluating each dependency's implications within your domains aligns with capability-based thinking. Impact measures its role in objectives; risk gauges potential fallout. Criteria like value, urgency, complexity, and stakeholder satisfaction underpin this evaluation. This ties into your business model or envisioned outcomes, offering a capability-centric perspective. Techniques like scoring, ranking, weighting, and categorizing spotlight pivotal dependencies. This interweaving of capability insight guides resource allocation and targeted mitigation, aligning actions with strategic capabilities.

The next step would be best served to create a unified roadmap, with other roadmaps contributing to a primary focal point. In this perspective, one primary roadmap encapsulates the overarching organizational strategy, while others serve as tactical contributors. This hierarchy ensures a singular strategic vision guides the organization while subsidiary roadmaps complement and execute it. The primary roadmap embodies the organizational strategy—setting direction, scope, and timelines for collective efforts. Subsidiary roadmaps serve as tactical enablers, aligning their objectives with the broader vision. This approach underscores the unity of purpose, allowing roadmaps to synergize rather than fragment.

To navigate this, a structured process reinforced by governance employing Business Architecture techniques is indispensable. This approach offers a comprehensive method to monitor, evaluate, and synchronize changes with strategic objectives, fostering deliberate alignment. This ensures changes serve a purpose and seamlessly integrate with envisioned outcomes.
