We are blessed to have technology available that offers easy conversations with video (i.e. Zoom). Find time & prioritize ways to build strong organizational cultural bonds that does not come across as "forced fun", and all the while, still getting the job done with your stakeholders.

I think you need to assure that the goals set are aligned with the rest of the organization and they should be SMART goals so they can be measured and worked on all the time. One of the best things my leaders of the past had me do is meet with the team weekly to discuss goals, how we are doing and get suggestions from the team on what each individual could try to do to improve results. It worked very well and getting the peer feedback was so helpful in improving results. I'd also discuss goals individually with staff members to assess how deep we needed to dive into it to realize improvements and work on timelines with a stretch to reach their very best!

It's a digital world full of information flowing and swirling around us all day. Sometimes it's helpful to just close the email and turn off the chat box for a bit to help enable that critical quiet time for trying to solve the daily, weekly and monthly problems that come at us all day long. Studies have shown that unplugging for a few minutes each can help to reset the nervous system and give the mind time to solve problems.

I wish I could say that you will have no distractions as a college administrator, but you're going to have tons. Your week can be planned out and so can your month. If you have something big coming up three months from now, you can plan that and plan to prepare for it. What will never stop is getting distracted. We have to be really good at being able to turn it on and off as needed. However, you can certainly block time on your calendar to work on large projects. You do figure out when you'll be busiest so down time is well spent blocking yourself from all interruptions. You can use your calendar on your computer and any project management software. For the big projects, you need to back into them and create small milestones.

While this is tedious & time consuming in-and-of-itself; however, what you have just done is built a human connection with those whom you manage and interact with professionally every day. Most importantly, you have set the relationship up on a positive, human note, rather than risking your very first "live" interaction being conducted under negative circumstances (which can happen).

Learning new things is so important in every industry, but vital in higher education. Things are changing so much and very quickly. If you are new to online education, taking a course is the best way to really learn the business. You become a user of the product. There's so much to learn. You can look for groups in the field on LinkedIn and get connected to folks in the industry. There are lots of free training courses available and accreditors also have paid training. I recommend knowing what's going on in K12 too, as that's where your students are coming from. Make sure you suggest (if you need approval) some PD that really interests you. Passion can really drive you to new heights!

One example is that I have a "drink water" timer set as sometimes I get so caught up in computer work, I forget to drink water or even just stretch. I can confidently say I take care of myself "outside" the virtual office, though I struggle with taking care of myself during.

We should keep the presentation as interactive as possible focusing more on student engagement. Long lectures should be avoided. Students can stay attentive only for around 45 minutes. The presentation should have more pictures than words. An effective way to have an online lecture is by explaining concepts using photos and videos rather than words.

It could be helpful to include that not every aspect of your job has to be online. Trying to incorporate tangible and physical work into your routine can bring a refreshing change of pace. Something as little as having a physical to-do list or having a physical space to do your online work can make a difference.
