How do you balance the demands and expectations of EAP learners and their academic disciplines?

Acquiring the rigor required to produce work that adheres to a style guide is one of the initial steps to help international students adjust to an academic environment. In my experience, most international students will need to learn either APA or IEEE, depending on whether they will study the soft or hard sciences. If you’re unsure which style guides a discipline prefers, you can contact the subject librarian at the university for guidance. Additionally, I like to do research on professors who teach at the target programs and analyze their academic papers. This allows you to either pre-teach some of the content or focus on vocabulary students will need to understand.

Easy, learn their disciplines. Step out of your comfort zone, and start learning subjects that were most likely avoided. EAP is more about knowing other subjects, faculties, and disciplines rather than grammar structure, verb forms, pronunciations and general English/TESOL/ESL/TEFL topics that do not connect directly to students' academic discipline. Remember, we are not teaching them how to become an English teacher, so change your approach to teaching. Start practicing and teaching critical thinking across all disciplines, along with research, writing, and presentation skills.

In my experience, EAP learners have enough skill in general language skills of grammar, and pronunciation, reading and writing and the teacher needs to focus on listening and speaking skills. These are the two areas that EAP students do not have much if any practice. It’s because the ESL teachers in their native language are also not proficient in speaking and listening and therefore do not focus on these skills to help the learners to use their language skills to improve their speaking skills.

I completely agree with Ezra's perspective on the significance of incorporating actual assignments and materials from the students' disciplines into the EAP curriculum. The authenticity of these materials significantly enriches the learning experience, making it more relevant and effective. In addition, by focusing on practical academic tasks such as presentations, research paper writing, and advanced writing skills tailored to specific fields, we can ensure that our teaching strategies are not only enhancing general language proficiency but also directly addressing the unique academic challenges our students will face. This approach is crucial for preparing them to meet the demands of their respective disciplines successfully.

Rather than isolating language lessons, blend them with subject-specific tasks. For example, students can practice research writing by analyzing actual papers from their fields. This approach allows them to master both the language and the academic conventions they’ll need in real-world scenarios, creating a more relevant learning experience. I did this by inviting experts within my students field for a class session multiple semesters.

Balancing EAP learning isn’t just about language skills—it's about developing the ability to think critically within academic contexts. Go beyond textbook examples by encouraging learners to engage with real-world problems from their disciplines. Use case studies or current events in their fields to stimulate discussion. This not only improves their language skills but also builds their confidence in analyzing and questioning the material they’ll encounter in their academic journeys. This is my favorite part when teaching EAP.

Balancing demands in EAP instruction involves offering meaningful, targeted feedback. Rather than only correcting errors, offer insights into how students can improve their academic communication. Consider offering individualized sessions to discuss both language use and the effectiveness of their arguments or research approaches. Feedback becomes a tool for growth, not just correction, helping learners succeed in both language acquisition, academic performance, and critical thinking.
