Agile product development was the original development framework. ‘Inventors’ have been using it for as long as products have been around. What it lacked was the linear nature of a waterfall approach. This approach provides a strong set of guides posts which the agile sprints can effectively occur. The agile approach is now the hot ‘new’ methodology, but on its own it is flawed in my experience. Being part of the development of over 1,000 products, the most effective product development frameworks are a hybrid approach that takes a baseline waterfall approach and overlays the agile approach to introduce the value of rapid iteration. Agile seems scary to many at first glance. I know it did for me as a UX researcher. Lately, I've observed a somewhat dogmatic approach to agile methodologies, as though they are a panacea for all problems, which is not always the case.

I think that clickable prototypes and user focus groups are the best way to really align a vision for an R & D team. This way you can actually have product validation fast.

As someone who works a lot with custom made parts, prototyping a product is a definite must. I sometimes use 3d design softwares to illustrate the parts. 1. We get to show how the parts will look like, the unseen quirks of a design and the ability to visualise how parts can fit together. 2. Making a virtual prototype is more cost efficient. Minor to major adjustments can be made without having to spend more capital on a premature design. 3. Having a prototype that can be stored in a cloud means, it can be accessed easily for clients, team members, stakeholders and yourself.

I find the "estimating" of how long something takes is a very hard thing to do in R&D. However, if you cluster time used for tasks that are similar, you can start seeing trends and medians. In addition, you can see which of your engineers are taking longer or less time on tasks versus others. This could be used to mentoring or coaching opportunities; let's say, calculating pressure vessels thickness's. In addition, as the world continues to globalize, data like this becomes more important and lead to better business decisions.

Zapier is the ultimate automation tool; anytime you are copying and pasting data between two systems, there is likely a way Zaiper could automate it. Airtable and Notion are also two tremendous products that add simple automation. The extendable spreadsheet and word doc, respectively, these tools allow users to build dynamic resources that enable data to flow in and out of them automatically.

In today's enterprise, the automation tools tends to align the KPI's, SLA's and Quality Metrics up to par via MashZone real-time data visuals to ensure the processes are monitored in real-time as per expectation. This is crucial element in Operations/IT management.

Personally, I use chatGPT every day in reviewing my roadmap and helping to create clear succinct product requirements. However, you do need to both prompt correctly and review and not just take at face value.

While it's possible for anyone to generate visually appealing results, the key questions are whether the simulation is set up correctly to yield accurate outcomes, and whether the results have been correctly interpreted to meet both the customer's needs and economic objectives.
