Identify risks. What happens if you do/do not secure funds from a VC? Might you secure funds elsewhere? What about boostrapping funding? Consider what each capital source's performance objectives are for your business and how those align to existing executive team's performance objectives. How might you feel if your board members remove you from a leadership role? Would you be willing to step away to retain the value of the business or would you react with a scorched-earth response? Prior to seeking funds, gain clarity of where your business is going and how to get there. Few people do so (or they use tools guided by non-experts), which is why most small businesses fail. Hiring an expert will save time and expedite profitable outcome.
