How can you adapt decision-making models for your project?

This model is grounded in logical and structured decision-making, where choices are made based on a systematic analysis of all available information and alternatives. For project leadership, this means using data-driven methods to evaluate options, such as cost-benefit analyses, risk assessments, and critical path methods. Decisions are made with a clear understanding of the expected outcomes, and there is a strong emphasis on objectivity.

The intuitive model relies on the project leader's experience and gut feeling to make decisions. This model is useful when quick decisions are needed, and there's a lack of concrete data. In project leadership, you would leverage your past experiences, heuristics, and personal insights to guide your choices. While this model can be faster, it is more subjective and should be balanced with rational analysis when possible.

This model involves the team in the decision-making process. It's based on the belief that those who are affected by a decision have a right to be involved in making that decision. The contingency model suggests that no single decision-making process is best for all situations. Instead, leaders must adapt their approach based on the specifics of each situation. As a project leader, you would assess factors such as the urgency of the decision, the complexity of the problem, the importance of stakeholder buy-in, and the level of uncertainty. Then, you'd choose the most appropriate decision-making style—whether it's rational, intuitive, participative, or another approach.

Rational, intuitive, participative are all part of the contingency model. If you have to choose one, choose the contingency model, as the others only work in text books. In real life I recommend mastering the contingency model while you build infrastructure for data driven decision making. Of course this data will need you to validate it, interpret it, gather insights and only then make decisions. There is still a lot of work to be done on the PM side, however, making decisions without data leaves you with very low decision accuracy. PM’s job is to separate the wheat from the chaff, especially when it comes to models, frameworks, methodologies… that will be used to build roadmaps, set priorities and deliver the product.
